Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Uniform crime reporting is a collective effort on the part of city, county, state, tribal, and federal law enforcement agencies to present a nationwide view of crime Agencies submit crime reports monthly to a centralized crime records facility within their state Except in Indiana, Mississippi & New Mexico The state UCR Program then standardizes the data and forwards it to the FBI’s national UCR Program INDIANA DEPARTMENT OF ADMINISTRATION
National Incident Based Reporting System (NIBRS) NIBRS intent to take advantage of available crime data maintained in modern law enforcement records systems NIBRS provides significantly more detail yielding richer and more meaningful data than those produced by the traditional summary UCR system INDIANA DEPARTMENT OF ADMINISTRATION
Current Status in Indiana Without Statewide UCR: With Statewide UCR: • Lack of uniformity • Minimal data sharing between agencies limiting effective crime solving • Inaccurate data • Inability to track or predict crime trends • Criminals assume IN is a venue to hide crimes • Less federal grant dollars • Central repository minimizes data inaccuracy and reduces waste • Major step towards real-time crime sharing • Agencies can track & predict crime trends to effectively utilize manpower • Benefits researchers • Brings in potential new businesses and grant dollars INDIANA DEPARTMENT OF ADMINISTRATION
