  2. WELCOME • Welcome to Wasteman SHEQ Induction Training • One hour session • Smoking - only in designated areas • Toilets • Emergency Procedure

  3. SHEQ SHEQ is one word that we place a lot of emphases on. SHEQ means a workplace and environment free from any conditions that may injure persons or cause poor health or pollute the environment. We strive for Wasteman to be a place where it is safe to work and where nothing is: • damaged by accident, • neglected, • lost, • wasted or • spilled through carelessness

  4. SHEQ POLICY We at Wasteman Holdings (Pty) Ltd care about your health and safety We don’t want to see you injuring yourself or getting a disease from the work you do. We also operate in a manner that aims to avoiding harm to the environment.   6. Duties of Employer – Section 8 • Identify, control or illuminate hazards in the workplace, • Appoint SHEQ Representatives, • Enforce SHEQ Rules, • Provide training w.r.t. hazards, • Acting on reported unsafe or unhealthy conditions. • Investigate Incidents

  7. Duties of Employee – Section 14 • Take care of your own health and safety and of other, • Carry out any lawful order given to you, eg. Wearing the correct PPE • Report any unhealthy or unsafe situation to your SHEQ rep. • Report any incident or accident before the end of your shift.

  8. Employee Representatives • SHEQ Representative – Full time employee who has been nominated by his colleagues and appointed by the employer. He will check the effectiveness of SHEQ measures in the workplace - • First Aider – Is a trained employee who will administer medical assistance in the event of an incident. Check with your Supervisor who is your SHEQ Representative and the First Aider for your area.

  9. Permit to Work system (PTW) • The ‘Permit to Work’ System is designed to ensure that any work that is not part of Wasteman’s day to day activities is performed safely • Contractors are required to have a permit before beginning any work on site • Wasteman Permit Issuers are responsible for ensuring that the Risk associated with any task is reduced to as low a level as possible • Permit Acceptors may be Contractors or Wasteman Personnel. • Contractors who work with Wasteman on a regular basis can receive training to be Permit Acceptors

  10. Using a PTW A PTW will be issued for the following work: • Hot work • Lock-out • Confine Space entry • Working at heights etc. YOUR SUPPERVISOR WILL TELL YOU MORE ABOUT THE PTW TRAINING

  11. Using machines and equipment on site. • Only authorised people may work with machinery or equipment • Only use machines and equipment you are trained for. • Never remove a lock-out tag, it is there for your safety. • Use the equipment it has been designed for. • Ensure your hand tools are in a good condition.

  12. GOOD HOUSEKEEPING • Good housekeeping is one of the biggest contributors to creating a safe workplace. • 1/3 of your time is spent in the workplace, so make it a pleasant stay. • Good housekeeping means that whatever you use or handle must be replaced in its storage place. • Remember a clean and tidy workplace means everyone is proud of their environment – leads to improve productivity, low accident risks.

  13. Health and Hygiene • Occupational Health focuses on preventing sickness and diseases resulting from the handling of hazardous substances or exposure to physical hazards. • Hazards will differ from place to place. Identify those you think you will be exposed to:

  14. Hazards you could be exposed to: • Noise • Poisons • Radiation • Smoke • Stress and fatigue • Temperatures extremes • Vapour • Chemicals, • Dirt • Dust • Fumes • Gases • Incorrect posture • Lifting incorrectly • Ventilation • Vibration PPE must be warn for most of the above hazards

  15. Environmental Issues • The natural environment in and around the site and yard is precious and must be maintained in a proper condition. • Unnecessary pollution of our water systems and natural water systems will not be tolerated. • Papers, bottles, tins etc. should be disposed of correctly, Let’s not leave them lying around.

  16. Personal Protective Equipment • When working near moving machinery, do not wear loose fitting clothing or jewelry • By law your employer must provide you with protective equipment to perform your duties. • Signage clearly marks various types of equipment to be worn. • You are legally required to use PPE provided. • Any contractor not using the correct PPE may be asked to leave the premises

  17. Reporting of Incidents and Accidents • It is a legal (OHS Act & NEMA) requirement that all incidents and accidents must be reported a.s.a.p. • ALL incidents and accidents must be reported to your Supervisor before the end of the shift. • Never assume the incident is to small to report. • If your Supervisor is not available or it is after hours, report the incident to Security or your SHEQ Rep.

  18. Driver / Forklift Safety • Only trained and authorised employees may use any Forklift, Vehicle or Tow motor. • No passengers allowed on forklift trucks • The following Identifications cards will be worn: • Forklift Drivers Card • Motor vehicle drivers card • Tow motor operator card.

  19. Tools • Injuries are caused by the incorrect use of tools. • Do not use defective tools. • Keep all tools in your care in good condition. • Carry tools in sheaths or holsters and not in your pockets. • Handling of tools must be done in a safe manner. • Ladders and scaffolds to be checked before use. • Ladders are to be securely footed when a person is working on a ladder

  20. Access • Employees/Contractors: Access will only be obtained if you in possession of a valid Identification card • Contractors will not be allowed to work on site if they haven’t had induction training. • No fire arms allowed on site. • Access will be denied if you under the influence of alcohol or any substances. • Breathalyser test could be done on everybody entering the premises.

  21. Fire safety • Always obey “No smoking signs” • Do not allow flammable waste materials to lie around. • Do not weld or use spark or heat producing equipment near open flame. • Any Hot Work perform on site NO HOTWORK WITHOUT A PERMIT TO WORK • Always transport flammable solvents in approved containers

Emergency procedure • Stay calm • Do not stop for valuables or to get a coat. • DO NOT RUN • If possible to complete safely as you leave: • Switch off electrical equipment • Close doors and windows • Leave the light on • Secure important documents and close office door behind you • Cease any telephone conversation. • Alert others around you. • Move to the assembly point and await further instructions from your Wardens. • In the case of a bomb threat, open up all windows. • Proceed to the Assembly point for your area.

  23. RECEPTIONIST TO SWITCH OFF SOUND ALARM CLOSE SWITCHBOARD AND WAIT ON INSTRUCTIONS FROM EC ELEC. APLLIANCES CONTINUOUS WARDEN AWAIT INSTRUCTIONS PROCEED TO THE ASSEMBLY POINT FROM THE EMERGENCY CONTROLLER CARRY OUT ROLL CALL WASTEMAN EVACUATION PROCEDURE

  24. CONCLUSION • Remember your duties, • Make Health and Safety a way of live, • Don’t take short-cuts, • Look out for others as well, • Follow safety instructions given to you, • Find out who your SHEQ Rep is, • Ask if you not sure!!
