  3. CURRENT CONDITION OF BRIDGE & THUS THE NEED FOR A PROJECT • Condition Rating of Bridge: 3.764 (based on scale of 1 to 7) • Federal Sufficiency Rating of Bridge: 29.2 (based on a scale 1 to 100) • Piers: Advanced State of Deterioration. • Primary Members: Main Carrying Members • Bridge Bearings • Bridge Joints • Wearing Surface

  4. PRELIMINARY ALTERNATIVES PERCEIVED AS REASONABLE • Rehabilitation • Replacement on Existing Alignment • Replacement on Slightly Modified Alignment • Replacement on Totally New Alignment (essentially new location)

  5. DISCUSSION OF REHABILITATION ALTERNATIVE(Minimum Work Required) • Paint Bridge • Replace Bearings (Jack up bridge, pour new pedestals, modify bearing connections, install new bearings) • New Bridge Deck Joints • New Wearing Surface • New Bridge Rail • Steel Repairs of Corroded Areas (primary & secondary members) • Rivet Removal & Replacement • Connection Repairs • Structure Repairs/Replacement • New Navigational Lighting • New Bridge Lighting • Deck Replacement on Span 7 Only • Repairs to Steel Beams (Piers on land) • Seismic Retrofits Where Possible

  6. DISCUSSION OF REPLACEMENT ALTERNATIVES • All New Bridge Structure Components • Seismic Design to Current Standards • Weathering Steel (no painting required) • Type of Structure – Probably Multi-girder Design • Architectural Enhancements

  7. EXPECTED ISSUES/DISCUSSSION POINTS • Age • Historical Nature of Bridge • Historical Nature of Area • Pedestrian & Bicyclists Accommodation (Roadway & Bridge Width) • Permits • Seismic Retrofits Or Design • Navigation Clearance (Horizontal) • Vertical Clearance on Bridge • Vertical Clearance Under the Bridge • Non-redundancy of Structure • Load Posting • Overall Bridge Length & Spans • Grades on Bridge • Sight Distance • Initial Project Cost • Life Cycle Costs

  8. NEXT STEPS • Aerial Survey • Mapping • Cores from Piers • Design Team Formulated • Full Bridge In-depth Inspection & Updated Load Rating • Establishment of a Lake Champlain Advisory Committee
