A Paradigm Is… • A framework of thought • A scheme for understanding and explaining certain aspects of reality • A distinct new way of thinking about an old problem • A new way of knowing • Involves a principle/knowledge that was present all along but unknown • Is usually not “figured-out” but is suddenly seen or understood

  3. A Paradigm… • Provides a set of rules or regulations • Establishes boundaries • Allows problem solving by using established ways/methods • Affects judgments and decision-making by influencing perceptions

  4. Theory Model Belief Systems Protocols Conventions Patterns Methodologies Routines Old ways/wisdom Tradition Customs Rituals Doctrine Orthodoxy Dogma Habit Common Sense Superstitions Other Words for Paradigm

  5. Filter incoming experience Way to view the world Help select data that best fits our rules / worldviews Ignore rest “What is obvious to one person may not be obvious to someone else operating from a different paradigm” Paradigms...

  6. Paradigm Paralysis... • There is only ONE way & NO other better way! • A need to use old “comfortable” paradigm • Past success & investment in the old paradigm = threatening to adopt / use new paradigm

  7. Paradigm Change Rejection Excuses • Anxiety, fear • Loss of power • Anger because expertise is irrelevant • Doubts success of the new paradigm • Jealousy of those who understand new way

  8. Paradigm Shift • Revolutionary new way of thinking about old problems • A change in perception • A new worldview • “Old rules” don’t work effectively anymore • Often involves an “a-ha” moment

  9. A New Paradigm... • Letting-go of the old • Does more than the old paradigm • Initially received with skepticism • Demands such a change in thought that many are unable to ever completely accept it
