  1. Data Warehousing-Is it really that important? Presented by: Darragh O’Dwyer

  2. Contents of this presentation • Summary of what Direct Access is. • Advantages of this concept • Potential issues • My opinion on the article and how it relates to IS6120

  3. What is the article about? • Company:Vanguard Solutions Group • The company is an innovative business intelligence provider. • Developed an innovative solution instead of using data warehousing called Direct Access. • Core concept behind the Vanguard solution is that business intelligence must be demand driven.

  4. What is the article about? • Direct Access addresses the problem of content relevance. • Direct Access solution architecture-G.P.S • Enterprise data sources, including multiple ERP databases, legacy systems, or spreadsheets, are dynamically accessed via a server-based middleware application called Real-Time Data Integration Server. (RDIS)

  5. Vanguard Solution Architecture

  6. What is the article about? • Automated publication and delivery of analytic content to end users. • Live user queries-due to the level of customization and end user control, the user very rarely needs to generate their own live queries against the relational database. • Three main live user direct queries that Vanguard use which is essential to Vanguard solution are: Content building, “drill backs” and pure ad hoc analysis.

  7. Advantages of Direct Access • Cost is reduced • Complexity is reduced • Deployment • Enables business to focus on the value of their information rather than on underlying technology.

  8. Advantages of Direct Access • Reacts to business change • Reacts to business trends • Installing is very quick- Company Example: Intertape

  9. Potential Issues • Mid-market firms suited • Can Vanguard persuade the traditional companies who are resistant to change to use Direct Access solution. • Should have gone into more detail of why direct access is superior to data warehousing.

  10. My opinion of Direct Access in relation to IS6120 Direct Access is used for medium sized companies or mid-market firms so would this solution falter if it was implemented in big market firms? Vanguard didn’t address this in the article. On the other hand, from my research, middle-market firms are growth prospects of more than 20% annually and five year revenue projections between $10 million and $50 million. These entrepreneurial firms are the back bone of the U.S economy.

  11. My opinion of Direct Access in relation to IS6120 • It seems that this alternative solution to data ware housing is very much U.S based. The article gave plenty examples of companies using this solution but all those companies are from the United States. If it was very successful, European countries would certainly have this technology but seems un heard of.

  12. My opinion of Direct Access in relation to IS6120 • The company has very much a strong background in data warehousing so I wouldn’t call this Direct Access solution a complete rip-off but I am sceptical that other non-US companies are not using this non data warehouse solution.

  13. Brief Conclusion of my views If I was CEO of a big company I wouldn’t use Direct Access as it may seem too good to be true and could fail after a few years, it doesn’t have the experience of a data warehouse which is the sole reason. Most companies whether small, medium or large can benefit from a data warehouse once the proper tools are in place and users are trained in analysis of results. Direct Access does not have this luxury.
