Why use Powerpoint presentations? • it’s fun to watch and gets the students’ attention • you can get important language and structures across through a mixture of sound, text, images and video • it inspires and motivates the students to work with the foreign language through the tool of ICT; • you can teach ICT through MFL and vice versa; • it allows students to be creative (with ICT) and achieve attractive, professional looking results.

  17. How can you use Powerpoint? As a teacher you can create presentations • on grammar points; • for oral exam preparation; • slide shows for cultural awareness; • “How to…” guides; • self-study exercises;

  18. How can students use Powerpoint? Students can create presentations • to practise their exam presentations with bullet points on slides; • to teach something as they understand it toothers; • as part of their coursework; • to gain confidence in general by creating stunning pieces of work.

  19. What is Powerpoint? It is a software package that can be seen as a combination of Word, Publisher and Media Player which allows you to combine • text (written in Powerpoint or pasted in from other sources, i.e. Word, Internet, CD-ROM encyclopedias etc) • images (clip art from galleries, Internet, CD-ROM encyclopedias, scanner, digital camera) • video clips (from Internet, gallery, camcorder) • sounds (from CDs, sound gallery, self-recorded)

You can add text, clipart, movie files and sound files easily… • just click “Insert” on the menu bar • a list of shortcuts to everything you might want to insert drops down: “Text box” for any writing you want to do (like this one); all the usual formatting options are available, i.e. different fonts, sizes,BOLD etc; you can have borders or bullet points and so on.

  21. “Picture” for any type of image • from “Clipart “ • “from File” = an image file anywhere on your PC, a floppy disk or CD-ROM • “from Scanner or Camera” • or, as mentioned before, by copying and pasting from the Internet (use the right click on your mouse)

  23. “Movies and Sound” • for short video clips, i .e. a motion clip from the gallery or from a file • for sound recordings already on a file or on a CD • for recording your own voice

  24. “Hyperlink” • to call up an Internet site then and there, e.g. the web cam from Berlin’s Potsdamer Platz or the weather forecast from a Spanish tv station • to call up a different file on your floppy disk or hard drive or CD.

Some important pointsto avoid frustration… • Don’t be too ambitious to begin with – start with 2 or three slides and see how it works • Movie clips and *.wav sound files take up a lot of memory – use them sparingly • Try it out before you use it in class • Always create backup copies somewhere.

  26. About animations… Order of appearance, timings and special effects of your animation(s) are controlled by “Slide Show”. Next click “Custom Animation” – then follow the instructions (or is it your intuition?)

  27. About filling the background … • Click on “Format” in the menu bar and then “Background”; • Click on the little down arrow below the picture to reveal “Fill Effects”; • Try out what shadings, directions, textures, and colour combinations are available; • Click “Apply to all” if you want every slide to have the same background.

  28. Final tips… • Press “F5” on the keyboard at any time to view your slide show; • Press “Esc” to end it and get back to the drawing board; • By pressing the space bar or clicking the mouse you progress through your slide show.
