Welcome to the Freshman Orientation for the 2010-2011 school year at Barren County High School! Principal Mr. Hale, Trojan Academy Principal Mrs. Prunty, and Guidance Counselor Mrs. Allen are excited to help you navigate this new journey. You'll learn about core classes, the Fresh Start program, registration, and the importance of attendance and participation. We’ll discuss options for electives, Advanced Placement courses, and the benefits of dual credit. Stay informed through various communication channels, and don't hesitate to reach out with questions!

Fresh Start Program Mrs. Allen, Guidance Counselor *Transition Concerns *Attendance, grades, discipline, team approach *Four Teams *Core classes of English, Algebra, Integrated Science, and Health/PE/Careers/Lifeskills *Advisory Time *Two electives *Different Schedule
Registration • Turn in registration forms to homeroom teacher by Friday, January 22 • English, Algebra, and Science • To ensure best education possible, students will be placed into these classes based upon test results and teacher recommendation • Students will be able to move up to honors if they choose
Registration • Electives • Year long – classes meet every day for 45 minutes • Block – meet for one semester for 90 minutes • Select top two choices • Provide alternate selections at the bottom
Credits **One class = one credit *5 credits = Sophomore *12 credits = Junior *18 credits = Senior *26 credits and 8 semesters to graduate **Freshmen can earn 7 credits **Sophomores – Seniors earn 8 credits each year
Things to Consider • Commonwealth Diploma • Requires 4 Advanced Placement classes and testing in 3 • Possible college credit • Must take foreign language each year of high school • Designate at top of registration sheet • Offer AP World Civilization, AP American History, AP English Language, AP Chemistry, AP English Literature, AP Spanish, AP French, AP Biology, AP Calculus, AP Statistics
Things to Consider • Dual Credit – Senior Year • Receive college credit and high school credit • At BCHS or at WKU, taken during the school day • Cost is at a discounted price • Offering Intro to Speech, Intro to Ed, Psychology 100, Math 110, Math 116, Chemistry 105/106, Sociology
Things to Consider • Barren County Area Technical Center • 31 courses that transfer to KCTCS • KEES – Scholarship money • Money is based upon grades for freshmen – senior year • Money can be used for in-state tuition • Better grades = more money
