Academic Success • Keep planner updated with due dates of tests, projects and quizzes. • Where do you go for help? • ESS- extended school services. • NHS- National Honor Society has student tutors. Check with Jeff Wright in room 306. • Write down phone numbers of at least two people in all of your classes. • Ask your teacher if they come early or stay late. Get a pass from your teacher for early appointments.

  3. Know Expectations If you are having locker problems: -talk to your teacher first to avoid a tardy. If you are absent from school: -have your parent call the main office before 9:00 a.m. daily. If you are absent from school for three days: -request homework assignments from the counseling office.

  4. Study Tips • Change Habits from Middle School • -If you only studied one hour after school in middle school, you might need to double that for high school expectations. • What type of learner are you? • -Auditory? –Visual? –Concrete? • Learn to take notes, outline, and study outside of class time alone and in groups.

  5. Avoid the $47,000 trap We have six grading periods at Male during the school year. The Mid-term and Finals are one-seventh of your final grade. Have a system: write the due date of the assignment in your planner, highlight it when you complete the assignment, and check it off when you turn it in to your teacher.

Clubs and Organizations • Pick at least one club or organization and get involved your freshmen year.(pg. 51-53 of your planner. • Volunteer in the community– nursing homes, red cross, volunteer at a hospital, walks for a cure, (Fight breast cancer). • Pick a club or organization that will help you develop a career– (Future Business Leaders of America.)

  15. Sports and NCAA • Every six week grading period you must pass all subjects and maintain a 2.0 GPA. • If not, you will attend one 15-day Study Skills Center while you continue to practice and play. • If you play a sport: • --You must have a physical Exam, athletic insurance and be on grade level.

  16. What is NCAA • This is a clearing house that all student athletes must join if they plan on playing sports at a Division 1 or 2 college. • Fee: $50.00 • What is the academic requirement? • 2.0 GPA and 18 on the ACT in 16 core courses at the high school level. • Know what is a core course.

  17. Communications • What if you fail a class for the grading period? You will receive a failing letter sent to your parents. This is a warning letter. • What if you fail again? You will receive a probation letter. You will have to fill out a success plan. Your parents will come in for a conference. If you continue to fail, you receive an exit letter and have to meet with the principal at the end of the school year.

  18. Summer School • If you fail one subject for the year: you must make that class up in the summer. • 3 options: • Summer School- 6 weeks- $350.00 • E-school- on your computer- $250.00 • Independent Study- workbook- $150.00 • Do everything you can not to fall in the $47,000 trap.

  19. Our Service to You • Tuesday Tutoring • Spend time with your counselors: • improving study skills • Researching colleges • Talking about life • Test prep • Sept 2, 16, 23, and 30th! • Meet in library from 2:30-3:30 • 3 Tuesdays a month all year!
