  1. Reconstruction Reconstruction was the time period after the civil when the north was rebuilding the south. Reconstruction took place between 1863 and 1877. President Lincoln was the main policymaker until he was assassinated in April 1865.

  2. Reconstruction act The reconstruction act dissolved any southern government that refused the 14 amendment

  3. Scalawags • Scalawags were southerners that agreed with the radical republicans ideas.

  4. Johnsons impeachment • Johnson was impeached on February 24,1868 for violating the tenor of office act. He was not convicted or thrown out of office because it was not a major offence. The government just wanted him out of office.

  5. Carpet baggers • Carpet baggers were people who wanted to make money out of the south's misery

  6. Blanche K. Bruce • Blanche K. Bruce was the first African American to serve a full term in the senate

  7. Conservatives • Conservatives wanted the south to change as little as possible.

  8. Ku Klux Klan • The Ku Klux Klan was a southern terrorist group who wanted to keep blacks out of power and often resorted to violence to do so.

  9. Freedmen Freedmen was a term given to former slaves who were now free. Most slaves were free because of the 13th amentendment wich made slavery illegal.

  10. Freedmen’s bureau • The Freedmen’s bureau was an agency that helped refugees after the civil war. The Freedmen’s bureau helped people by giving them healthcare an education and also helped employ refugees.

  11. Andrew Johnson • Andrew Johnson was the 17th president of the United States. He was the Abraham Lincolns vice president so he took office in April 1865 after Abraham was assassinated. He helped abolish slavery by demanding that all states follow the 13th amendment.

  12. Black codes • The black codes forbid African Americans to vote, own guns, or serve on a jury. The black codes also forced African Americans to sign a working contract.

  13. Radical republicans Radical republicans were those who opposed President Johnson. The heads of the Radical republicans were Thaddeus Stephens and Charles Sumner.

  14. 13th Amendment • The 13th amendment officially abolished slavery in the United States. The 13th amendment was added to the constitution on December 6, 1865.

  15. 1876 election • The republican Rutherford hays was agents the democrat the Samuel Tilden. After Samuel won he removed the troops from the south

  16. Industrial growth • The south mined iron, copper, coal and steel

  17. Grandfather clause • The Grandfather clause was a law that excused voters from the literacy test if there grand father was eligible to vote.

  18. Segregation • Segregation separated people of different races from public places.

  19. Jim Crow laws • The Jim crow laws were laws about segregation.

  20. Plessy vs. Ferguson • Plessy Vs. Ferguson was supreme court case that challenged the segregation laws. The supreme court ruled segregation leagly as long as the facilutys were equill.
