  2. Homologous Structures • Structures that have different mature forms in different organisms but develop from the same embryonic tissues. • Anatomical similarities • Example: limbs of reptiles, birds, and mammals constructed from the same basic bones.

  3. Homologous Structures • Limbs or the different organism has adapted to enable the organism to survive • These similarities and differences help biologists group animals according to how recently they last shared a common ancestor.

  4. Embryology • Early stages, embryos, of many animals with backbones are very similar • Demonstrates that the same groups of embryonic cells develop in the same order of all vertebrates. • Common cells produce homologous structures.

  5. Fossils • Fossil record—provides evidence about the history of life on Earth. • It also shows how different groups of organisms, including species have changed over time. • Shows life on Earth has changed over time. • 99% of all species have become extinct

  6. Fossil Formation • Form in sedimentary rock. • In the right conditions, the remains will be kept intact and free from decay • Weight of layers of sediment compresses the lower layers and with chemical activity turns animal remains into rock.

  7. Relative Dating • Comparing its placement with that of fossils in other layers of rock. • Index fossils—easily recognizable and must have existed for a short period but have a wide geographic range. • Relative dating allows paleontologists to estimate a fossils age compared with that of other fossils.
