  4. An Unexpected Twist (pun intended) This AT section hike through Virginia ended due to fracturing my ankle while descending the Three Ridges near Chimney Rocks. I was on a two-day southbound section hike from Rockfish Gap (Waynesboro, VA) to Fish Hatchery Road (Montebello, VA). I hobbled 2 miles to Harpers Creek Shelter using trekking poles and help from Keith and Holly, a young couple out "running the trail." After spending Sunday night at Harpers Creek Shelter, three thru-hikers ("Hell on Bad Wheel, Barley, and Rain") came to my rescue Monday morning, bringing me crutches and helped me go the 2.6 miles down the AT to the Tye River and Va. 56 where we took a car to the Dutch Haus B&B in Montebello, VA. Thus, I completed all but 9.4 miles (Tye River south to Fish Hatchery Road) of the AT from Springer Mtn., GA, to Rockfish Gap, VA, 850.5 miles from Springer. I hiked 380 miles in Virginia during this twenty-three-day section hike.
