  1. Welcome! Thank you for coming to the Owls Class ‘class meet’

  2. Class blog – how to ‘follow’ • See how to ‘follow’ the blog • I update the class blog once or twice weekly with: • Photographs • Useful links • MyMaths reminders • Copies of Owls specific letters

  3. MyMaths • See how MyMaths tasks align with classwork, and other points: • Tasks can be redone several times • I see exactly how the child has performed, and can act accordingly

  4. Curriculum map – this term • This letter/map outlines what we’re learning about this term: • Core subjects • Foundation subjects • Key dates

  5. Reading – How long should we read for? • Be guided by how long your child can concentrate for. • Routines are good - a bedtime story can be a nice way for you to spend a small amount of time together and wind down after a busy day. • Shorter bursts of reading throughout the day may be a good idea but, again, be guided by how long your child can focus for.

  6. Tips to help children enjoy reading • Join your local library - get your child a library card. Allow them to pick their own books, encouraging their own interests. 2. Match their interests - help them find the right book - it doesn’t matter if it’s fiction, poetry, comic books or non-fiction. 3. All reading is good – don’t discount non-fiction, comics, graphic novels, magazines and leaflets. Reading is reading and it is all good! 4. Get comfortable - snuggle up somewhere warm and cosy with your child, or make sure they have somewhere comfy if they’re reading alone. 5. Ask questions – to keep them interested in the story, ask your child questions as you read such as, ‘What do you think will happen next?’ or ‘Where did we get to last night? Can you remember what has happened already?’ 6. Read again and again - encourage your child to re-read favourite books and poems. Re-reading helps to build up fluency and confidence.

Reading at Plumpton - Owls • Children read every day at school • Shared reading - Teacher reads and makes overt what good readers do through modelling. =80-89% accuracy (hard). • Independent reading - Children practise without the teacher’s help. =95-100% accuracy (easy). • Reading comprehension – understanding meaning/deeper questioning.

  8. School & home link • Reading Stars - when children bring in their reading records, the names of all the children who have read 4 or more times that week will be entered into a prize draw. Every Friday in assembly, we will reveal which class has read the most at home each week. Older children can fill out their reading records themselves.
