Nouns • Nounsare person, place, things or idea. • Ex: Kaitlyn went to West Valley High School for four years. • Common nouns names a group of people, ideas, places or things that are not usually not capitalized. • Ex: West Valley is going to beat Hemet High at the football game. • Proper nouns names a particular person, name, place, or Idea and is usually capitalized. • Ex: West Valley’s next football game is Friday, October 15th. • Concrete noun means a place, person or thing that can be applied to one or more of the five senses. • Ex: Alexis ate some bananas before the game to help build energy. • Abstract nouns name an idea, characteristic, or feelings. • Ex: The dream was only so far away.

  3. Pronouns • Pronounsare words that are used in place of one or more nouns or pronouns. • Ex: Amy thought she lost her phone, but she left it on the counter. • Antecedents are the nouns the pronouns refer to. • Ex: The football player injured his right leg. • Personal Pronouns it refer to the one who speaks(first person), the one spoken to(second person), or the one spoken about(third person). • Ex: My friends and I like to hang out. • Demonstrative Pronouns point out a specific person, place, thing, or idea. • Ex: She walked to that football game. • Interrogative Pronouns introduce a question. • Ex: What is her name? Adjectives • Adjectives are words that describe nouns or pronouns. • Ex: The cheer jerseys were the schools colors. • Demonstrative Adjectives modify pronouns. • Ex: She wanted to draw that picture. • The difference between pronouns and adjectives are that adjectives modify, or describe, nouns or pronouns while pronouns take place of nouns. • Articles are words that refers to any member in a group. • Ex: The animals escaped their cages at the zoo.

  5. Verbs • Verbs are words that describes actions or a state of being. • Ex: She ran to the moving car to get her purse. • Helping Verbs are verbs that help explain the main verb. • Ex: He cando anything he wants. • Action Verbs show physical or mental action. On the other hand, non-action verbs show no action. These can be helping verbs, too. • Ex: Paige imagined that she will be a princess.

  6. Adverbs • Adverbsmodify verbs, other adverbs, or adjectives. They tell where, to what extent, how, or when. • Ex: Katie ran very quickly to her mom after she got off the plane. • Adverbs that modify verbs show meaning to the verb. • Ex: For the plant to grow, you have to water it weekly. • Adverbs that modify adjectives give more definition to the adjective. • Ex: He said the weather would be slightly hotter than yesterday. • Adverbs that modify other adverbs usually shows to what extent the adverb is used. • Ex: That girl was always too late to do P.E.

  7. Prepositions • Prepositions are words that show a certain relationship with a noun or pronoun. • Ex: The dog was hiding under the table. • Commonly used prepositions are below, above, under, with, beside, across, and about. • Ex: He ran across the street to get his wallet. • Compound prepositions are according too, because of, out of, in place of, instead of, next to, and in addition to. • Ex: The baby’s bottle was lying on the counter next to the toaster.

  8. Conjunctions • Conjunctionsare words that joins words together. • Ex: The city was redoing the sidewalks and parks of the small neighborhood. • Coordinating conjunctions join words that are used in similar ways. • Ex: The missing girl wasn’t at the park nor the babysitter’s house. • Correlative conjunctions are pairs of conjunctions that are used in the same way. • Ex: Neither Jorge nor Daniel told who started the fight.

  9. Interjections • Interjections are words that show emotion. They have no grammatical relation to the sentences around it. • Ex: Hey! • Ex: Boy-oh-boy! • Ex: Ah!
