  1. Will the world become high context-culture when it is Completely internationalized? Presenter: Sohei Tateno

  2. Thesis statement The world would become high-context culture when internationalization is complete, and the world would be one country ruled by one government.

  3. Introduction • It seems that the world is now rapidly being internationalized and gradually becoming low-context culture. However, if it become low-context enough, I believe the world would go to be high-context culture for the following reasons.

  4. What is needed to become high-context culture? Integration of the language is nessesary. Why? For example, In Japan, 99% of people speak Japanese (very well). However, in America,…

  5. According to linguist Bernstain, In high-context culture, the words and sentences collapse and become shorter. For example, 行ってしまった ⇒ 行っちまった やってないです ⇒ やってねぇ I do not laugh ⇒ I don’t laugh When does this happen?

  6. When most people can speak the language with ease, This shortcut occurs. For people who does not speak the language very well, it is all they can do to understand the formal language, and they are not afford to understand collapsed sentences. ↓ Thus this shortcut occurs more often in high-context culture than in low-context culture.

  7. Therefore, language integration is necessary to become high-context Will the languages Integrate in the future? ・These days, Most people learn English.

  8. Languages are getting closer each other Japanese English is a good example. 円板⇒ディスク 電子計算機⇒コンピューター 帳面⇒ノートブック or ノート Korean English is another example. notebook ⇒노트북 (ノートゥブク) television ⇒텔레비전 (テレビヂョン) computer ⇒컴퓨터(コムピュート)

  9. English also introduces words of other languages. English-Japanese 津波⇒ tsunami 布団⇒ futon French-Japanese 娘⇒ mousme 神⇒ kami フグ⇒ fugu

  10. People choose the main words, and other words remain as dialect Japanese never call computers as “電子計算機” now. Thus we introduce the words which sounds better or easy to say, to our own language. The discarded words will disappear, or remain as dialect; For example, In Akita-ben, おはようございます is どもー. どもーremains as dialect because some people still say どもー.

  11. People also introduce words which they do not have in their own language • Wangari Muta Maathai an enviromentalist from Kenya, were impressed with the Japanese word “もったいない” because they did not have such a word in their language, and started “MOTTAINAI campaign”.

  12. Throughout a long time by introducing and discarding words, the languages will be similar each other ・Like Kansai people can communicate with Kanto people with Kansai-ben, the time people can communicate with almost any people in the world without translation, will come, though so many dialect will remain. ↓ Then the world will go to high-context culture.

  13. If we could shrink the earth's population to a village of precisely 100 people, There would be: • 57 Asians • 21 Europeans • 14 North and South Americans • 8 Africans In other words, ・70 would be non-white ・30 would be white

  14. US Census Bureau estimates that Whites in America will be minority in 2042. IN2000 IN 2042 ⇒⇒ ⇒⇒ ⇒⇒

  15. It seems that The rate of race composition of America is gradually becoming The rate of race composition of the world And I surmise that the world finally become…

  16. America ⇒ Japan ⇒ Other countries ⇒

  17. After the nationalities are mixed enough, what happens? • We will not feel other countries as a foreign country any longer because the composition of nationalities are almost same in any country. There will be no difference between countries except for the name of the country and some dialect. In my opinion, the world finally will be one country ruled by one government because we probably will feel it is tired if the rule changes area by area, and think we should have the common rule.

  18. How long would it take to be high-context culture if the world are completely mixed? Considering Japan and China…

  19. Body languages also will be spread to the world some will become the main body languages, and other will disappear, or will be dialect. For example, • Gesture showing “me” • Chopping for expressing “sorry” in Japan

  20. President Regan said if creatures from outer space tried to attack the earth, the world will be integrated Is This true?

  21. CONCLUSION There are still some ethnic groups which do not accept foreigners, but throughout a long time, I believe they will accept foreigners, as Japan gave up Sakoku(national Isolation).
