Time Zones. Time zones are broad strips that measure 15 degrees wide. Time zones differ from their neighboring time zones by 1 hour. The continental U.S. has 4 time zones, Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific.

  1. Time Zones • Time zones are broad strips that measure 15 degrees wide. • Time zones differ from their neighboring time zones by 1 hour. • The continental U.S. has 4 time zones, Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific. • In the Spring we shift the clocks 1 hour ahead. This is called Daylight Saving Time. • In the Fall we shift the clocks 1 hour back.

  2. Time Zones (cont….) • Greenwich Mean Time- is the time that is registered at Greenwich, England. • **Greenwich Mean Time is another name for Universal Time. • The International Dateline was established following the 180th meridian, where ever we cross it the date advances 1 day ( if you are going west), or goes back 1 day (if you are going east).

  3. Greenwich, England is the logical starting point for time zones. Why??? • The world rotates west to east (counterclockwise), time zones to the east of the Prime Meridian are ahead of the those time zones to the west of the Prime Meridian.

  4. A CHEESY SAYING • EAST INCREASE • Time is forward to all places to the east • WEST LESS • Time is backward to all places to the west

  5. East Increase – West Less(1 hr per l5°) If it 9 p.m. at Position D, what time is it at position C? Position B? If it is 1 p.m. at Position X, at which location is the time 5 p.m.

  6. Earth rotates west to east Solar time is based on the position of the sunNIGHT IS FALLING ON EARTH Look at the East Coast of the United States. The lights are already lit. California the sun is still visible.

  9. NIGHT IS FALLING ON EARTH. Look at Paris and Barcelona, the lights are already lit, meanwhile in London, Lisbon and Madrid the sun is still visible. Looking south, we can see the islands in the middle of the ocean. We have a perfect view of the British Islands, Iceland and Canada.
