Time Zones. By Noah Conk. Why do we need time zones?. A long time ago people told time by the sun’s location. Because of this, cities that were only a short distance away may have different times. As people started to travel they needed a better way to tell time.

  2. Why do we need time zones? • A long time ago people told time by the sun’s location. • Because of this, cities that were only a short distance away may have different times. • As people started to travel they needed a better way to tell time.

  3. How did we get our Time Zones? • Scientists started thinking about time zones by saying that everyone wants the sun to be at the highest point at 12 noon (midday). • The earth spins, as it travels around the sun, one half of the earth is in darkness and one half in light, all the time.

  4. How did we get our Time Zones? • The scientists came up with a way to separate the earth into different time zones. • The time zones are world globe division of 15° each, starting at Greenwich, England • Greenwich was chosen because the prime meridian runs through it.

  5. What are Time Zones? • There are a total of 24 time zones each separated by 15 °. • In one hour of a day the earth rotates 15 ° which leads us up to another time zone. • This is how we have twenty four hours in a day.
