Exploring the Impact of Lab-Based Learning on Genetics Student Outcomes
This research investigates whether delivering the genetics curriculum through a 4-credit lab course adds value compared to a 3-credit lecture-only format. Specifically, it addresses two key questions: 1) Does the method of teaching, whether through lab or lecture, affect student learning outcomes when locating three genes on a chromosome? 2) Does modifying the traditional "cookbook" pGLO lab with guided inquiry improve learning gains? The alignment of objectives with learning goals will also be discussed, shedding light on effective pedagogical strategies in genetics education.

Research questions… is there value-added for genetics to be 4 credit Lab versus 3 credit lecture only??? Question 1-does delivery of locating 3 genes on a single chromosome via lab or lecture change student learning outcomes? Question 2 – does a guided inquiry lab modification of the pGLO increase student learning gains versus the previously used “cookbook” pGLO lab?
