Didactic Literature (cont.) • Zen Buddhism • An austere tradition within Buddhism • Originated in China and branched to Japan • Meant to “free the mind of conventional logic through meditation” • Parables are often used to impart wisdom • Confuscianism • Emphasizes obligation to act responsible and sensibly, carrying out duties to family and society. • Wisdom attributed to Confuscious (-479b.c.) • His maxims are collected in the Analects • Confuscious followed the way of goodness • He believed that studying ancient teachings connected people to the “continuous chain of minds from the past to their own time.”

Didactic Literature (cont.) • Taoism • Followers accept life joyfully and are willing to yield to the natural world and become one with it. • Tao Te Ching or “Classic of the Way of Power” is a collection of maxims attributed to Lao Tzu (legendarily born an old white haired and bearded man who lived to 160) • Consists of maxims and anecdotes • Sufism • A religion and philosophy • A mystical sect of Islam • Sufis withdraw from the material world • They meditate on God’s love, the development of the human mind and reaching a higher plane of understanding

  10. Didactic Literature (cont.) • African Wisdom • The oral traditions of the various African cultures use proverbs to explain people’s values. • Proverbs can be poetic, containing great meaning with few words.
