Write the following in your journal: • Connotations, or shades of meaning. • Example: You might describe the rigid attitude of someone you admire as resolute (firm) but someone you disapprove of as obstinate (stubborn) • Examples: • slender: pleasing, graceful thinness • Connotation: positive • The tall slender ballerina looked elegant in her costume. • emaciated: unnaturally thin • Connotation: negative • A protracted illness left her weak and looking emaciated.

  2. Directions 1. Create two columns: POSITIVE and NEGATIVE. 2. Place the words on the next slide in each numbered pair in the appropriate column. 3. Select one word from each pair, and consider its connotation, 4. Write a sentence using the word correctly.
