Chapter 6 Vocabulary • Testify: To make a statement under oath Pg. 86 • Grim: Harsh in appearance, stern Pg. 86 • Apparent: open to view; appearing to be true Pg. 87 • Aim: to intend; to direct toward a goal. Pg. 87 • Conviction: strong belief; the act of being found guilty of a crime. Pg. 89 • Scowl: frown or angry look Pg. 89 • Towheaded: having soft, blonde hair Pg. 95 • Fiend: very wicked or cruel person Pg. 97 *Vocabulary Activity: Find the words on the pages provided and write the sentence from the book that the word is used.

  3. Chapter 6 Objectives • Tell why Cherry becomes a spy for the Greasers • Relate the decision that Johnny makes • Discuss Dally’s advice to Johnny about his parents • Describe what the boys find when they get to the church • Review the heroic actions of Pony, Johnny, and Dally

  4. Chapter 6 Notes • Cherry became the Greaser’s spy because she felt the whole mess was her fault. She said she would testify that Johnny acted in self-defense. • Johnny decided he wanted to go back and turn himself in. He was hurt because Dally told him his parents were not worried and hadn’t asked about him. • When Dally brought Pony and Johnny back to the church, it was on fire. • After they heard yelling coming from the inside, Johnny and Pony went in the burning church to save the kids inside.

  5. Chapter 6 notes continued • Pony made it out of the fire just as the roof collapsed. • Dally saved Johnny from the fire. • Dally, Pony, and Johnny were taken to the hospital by ambulance. • A piece of timber hit Johnny in the back and he was burned badly. When Pony saw Johnny at the hospital, he was unconscious. • Dally’s one arm was burned badly. • Jerry Wood stayed with Pony until Soda and Darry got to hospital.

  6. Notes continued • Pony hugged both his brothers and realized Darry cared about him and Darry’s silent fear was losing someone else close to him.
