  2. Safety • Nobody disputes that the risks of schools using social media are real and not to be taken lightly. But, maybe the best way to keep students and schools safe, online or offline, is to model good practices and teach good practices.

Interesting Social Media Stats • 50% of Facebook users log into the site everyday • 175,000,000 users every 24 hours • Still increasing number of users 40% every 6 months • The fastest growing Facebook segment is those aged 50 and over • 700,000 websites have created Facebook content • Average Facebook user has 130 friends • Flickr hosts more than 4 Billion images • Youtube.com is the 2nd largest search engine in the US

Facebook Ideas • Posting information online • Schedules • Pictures (how many are not seen now) • Information • Journalism class to post their stuff online • Art class their paintings • A video of the soccer team scoring goals • Geocaching hunts and games • Computer class to sustain and making this environment grow

Other Ideas • Students have access to faculty and student projects and can get inspiration for their own projects • Students post questions to the wall for a specific faculty member and that faculty member answers the questions • Students comment and ask questions on the class material as the class proceeds. The messages are projected onto a screen, allowing everyone in the class including the teacher to see the messages.

  6. Where to start • Listen – Look at and learn from others in your industry. • Common trends? Writing style? Look/feel? • Engage – Post, answer, discuss and comment • Network – Add fans, get followers, link in, ask your readers to participate and respond to their questions

Facebook Suggestions • Choosing a name for your Page • Use your business name or website address in title • Keep it short and search friendly • Create a unique username (facebook.com/yourname) • Default landing tab • Share your latest news & events • Be creative with pictures & videos • Offer special promotions & discuss your latest sales
