Introductions • Ministry of Education • Name: Raja Azahar Raja Sulaiman • Position: Assistant Director, Sports, Arts and Co-curriculum Division, Ministry of Education • Role: Drives science and technology program in MOE • Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) • Name: Arshad bin Omar • Position: Deputy Director 1, Education and Training (Secondary) Division, MARA • Role: Heads curriculum development and enrichment programmes • Intel • Name: Hasnan Hakim • Position: K12 Education Program Manager • Role: Drives Intel’s education program in K12 space

Educational Environment (MOE) • Number of schools: ~10,000 schools (Primary-Secondary schools) • Number of teachers: ~350,000 teachers • Number of students: ~2 million • Uses national curriculum with Science and Math being taught in English • Division organizes more than 30 science and math co-curriculum programs

  4. Educational Environment (MARA) • Maktab Rendah Sains MARA (MRSM) or MARA Junior Science College was established under the Ministry of Entrepreneur and Co-operative Development. The first school was built in 1972 in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia. • The national curriculum is the primary curriculum. • All Forms 3 and 5 students are required to sit for the Public Examinations. • Currently, there are : • 44 MRSMs (Forms 1 - 5, aged 13 - 17) including 3 Forms 4 - 5 only colleges and 3 Forms 1 - 3 only colleges) • Student population : 450 - 900/MRSM. Total : appr 34,400 students • Teacher population throughout all MRSMs: appr 2,692 teachers

Science Fairs (MOE) • National Science and Engineering Innovation Project Fair is affiliated with Intel ISEF since 2003 • Annual fair is normally organized in different cities in August-September timeframe • Approximately 300 project entries each year from schools and 30-35 finalists • Fair is part of MOE’s science excellence program

  6. Science Fairs (MARA) • The National MRSM Young Scientist Fair or Tunas Saintis was initiated in 1985. It was held in July every year (up until 2008). Starting 2009, it will be held every October. • Each MRSM will have a chance to host the fair. • Has been affiliated with the Intel ISEF since 2002. • 2008 participants were from 34 MRSMs with observers from 4 MRSMs. • Approximately 340 students participated in the national fair of 2008.

General Challenges • Lack of awareness of the correct procedure of doing science research among teachers • Lack of funds and financial support from organizations • Lack of time to complete projects • Lack of appropriate skills in teachers and students • Lack of awareness among institutions and community on the importance of students performing science research • Lack of facilities which are related to doing the scientific research • Too much emphasis on academic goals makes students less interested in participating in science projects • Some projects are hurried, inadequate research and experimentation
