  2. History of The Bahamas • The water there is relatively shallow. "Baja Mar" is Spanish for shallow sea. The Spanish letter "J" is pronounced like the English letter "H." This sounds like Ba-Ha-Mar. • Indians were the first ones there • When Columbus became the first Bahamian "tourist," he called the people who lived there "Indians," but they called themselves Lucayans, which means "Island People." • The Bahamas had a good harbor with two entrances/exits and was inhabited primarily by seafarers. • After the Declaration of Independence in 1776, many of the English Loyalists also known as Tories left Georgia and the Carolinas either to Florida, or to the Bahamas.

History of The Bahamas • The Treaty of Versailles in 1783 restored Florida to Spain, forcing Florida Loyalists to the Bahamas to remain under the British flag. • By 1788, about 9300 Tories (American supporter of Britain) had fled to the Bahamas • Many slaves were transported here for labor work on cotton plantations • The Bahamas gained independence from Britain on July 10, 1973. • The new nation was admitted to the United Nations the same year

Current Info/ Facts of The Bahamas • Includes over 700 islands • Some islands include Abaco, Andros, Acklins, Crooked island, Biminis, berry island, cat island, Eleuthera, Exumas, Inaugas, Mayaguana and San Salvador • Land area is slightly smaller than Connecticut total area is slightly larger than Connecticut and Rhode Island Combined.

  7. Queens Staircase • Located in Nasseu • One of the most famous architectural sights in Nassau • Staircase is a flight of 66 steps that links Fort Fincastle to the Princess Margaret Hospital. • It was not built but carved out of calcareous (coral based) sandstone at the end of the 18th century.

Cable Beach • It was a beach without a name until 1907, when the trans-Atlantic cable was laid here, connecting The Bahamas to Jupiter, Florida. • This beautiful beach is now the ultimate tropical playground, fringed by hotels and casinos. • Right off the beach is a golf course that you can enjoy • Located off Nassau

Castaway Cay • 1000 acre island that is private to Disney Cruise Line • Floats, jet-skis, paddle boats, and other water toys can be rented at the Family Beach. • Castaway Ray's Stingray Adventure is located near the Teen Beach. This is a hands-on supervised opportunity to interact with native Caribbean sea life for an additional fee • They even have a beach called Serenity Bay that is strictly for adults 18 and older.

  10. Ardastra Gardens, Zoo and Conservation Center • 5 and a half acre park that is part jungle and part garden • Its home to hundreds of mammals, birds and reptiles from around the world • Many endangered species are located here • It even includes marching flamingos!

Pirates of Nassau Museum • Includes 3 historical buildings • The Slave Kitchen approx. 200 years old, • Lofthouse about 150 years old • Marlborough Arms which is close to 100 years old • An exhibit which opened in 1998 is called "best Pirate Exhibit in the World," by Dr. David Cordingly, author of "Under The Black Flag,"
