  1. The Bahamas • By Youssef S. & Ismail

  2. AboutTheIsland. • The Bahamas is an English speaking independent nation comprised entirely of islands. The Northern portion of the Bahamas island chain is located around 50 miles to the East of the United States at the narrowest point between the two countries. The population of the Bahamas is estimated to be around 307,000. About 60% of the population lives in the capitol city of Nassau. • This unique aquatic nationis comprised of over 700 islands and 2000 cays sprinkled across the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea. • All that water is why they love the Bahamas. They love to sail, surf, kayak, fish, swim, snorkel, and dive. They love pretty much anything that has to do with the ocean.

  3. Transportation • Bus • Public buses or "jitneys," as we like to call them, are generally 32-seaters and travel to many parts of the island. They operate from 6:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. daily, except on Sundays when there is reduced service. The fare ranges from $1.25 per person to $3.50 for out-of-town zones. Exact fare is required. Check with your hotel's bell desk for bus routes. • Ferries • There is hourly ferry service from the downtown area (behind the Straw Market) to Paradise Island daily. The cost is $4.00 each way. • Rental Cars • Rental cars are available from rental car facilities located at the airport, some major hotels and at locations within the city. You must be 21 years old and possess a valid driver’s license for all car rentals. Visitors may use their home driver’s license for up to three months or can apply for an international driver’s license if staying with us longer. But remember, when you take to the road, please keep to the left. • Taxis • Taxi stands are conveniently located at the airport, the docks and most hotels. Taxi service is also available by telephone or on the street. Taxi rates in Nassau & Paradise Island are zoned, or can also be metered. Metered rates are reasonable and are fixed by law. Surcharges often apply for more than two persons and extra luggage. You can request to be charged by the taxi meter, rather than a flat rate, if you prefer. Fares for up to two passengers from the airport to points in the West are $15-$17.00, to Downtown Nassau - $22.00, and to Paradise Island - $27.00 plus a $1.00 bridge toll.
