Teacher Introduction • I grew up in Allentown, undergrad at Susquehanna University, Master’s from Wilkes • Master’s Degree in Education Technology • 11 years of overall teaching experience, 10 At MEC • Love the beach, Flyers hockey, the Eagles, Snoopy, pineapples • My goals for the year: To help each of my little learners become the best people they can be.   5. First Quarter Expectations • Please refer to handout • If your child is able to do these skills at the end of the first quarter, they will receive a 3 in that area. Each quarter we will send home a new list of expectations that become more challenging as the year goes on. • Feel free to take the list home and let me know if you have any questions.

Reading Program • McGraw-Hill • Focuses on reading fluency, reading fiction and non fiction, comprehension, key details, main idea, phonics, decoding, and summarizing • Writing components include grammar, handwriting, sentence structure, spelling, and the stages of the writing process • Spelling- spelling words come from the words we use each week, challenge words are words we are learning but they do not need to spell right now in first grade

  9. Math Program • Envisions • Student friendly math concepts that align with common core • Homework daily unless a testing day • Letters will go home for each topic along with vocabulary cards (they can keep these at home) • Pearson math

  10. WIN (What I Need) • This will not be starting until a little later in the year • Students will be organized into groups based on their needs. Higher reading needs will be pulled with reading specialist. Tier 2 students will be pulled in small groups with 4 teachers. Students on level or beyond will be getting extra practice in reading, writing, speaking and listening, in the other classrooms. • Groups are flexible meaning we will move students from group when skills are mastered. • More information will be coming.

Science Program • FOSS science kits (Full Option Science System) • Hands on program that lets students explore science in their own way then teaches the vocabulary and science behind it. • This program lets students explore the world around them in order to builder a deeper understanding on their own. • Student directed learning with teacher acting as a guide

WOW (Word of the Week) • Each week we will have a designated word for that week • If you find the WOW word anywhere, you can write it down on the spreadsheet. • I will submit the spreadsheet to WOW central and your child will have a chance to win a WOW cape. Some students who participate will even get the chance to be recorded reading the WOW word on our morning announcements. • Extra sheets are available if you are interested

  13. Grading • We use a 4, 3, 2, 1 scale • 4 means they are working about what is expected currently • 3 means they are exactly where we want them to be • 2 means they are struggling a little but still making progress or gains • 1 means they are not making sufficient gains where we think they will catch up without interventions and extra help • Tests get graded by points, points will add up to the scale • I send all tests home in their home work folder as soon as they are graded and recorded (Except some in the first quarter- saved for conferences) • I do not need the tests back. If you have a question you can send it back with the test for me to review.

  14. Z-Pass • Must stay attached to the book bag the child uses every day for school. If you switch book bags, please attach the Z-Pass to the new bag. • If the Z-Pass is lost, please contact the school right away so we can get you a new one. They are important for the safety of your child. • Basics: • Way to keep students safe and know where they are • Students swipe when they get on the bus at the stop and at school
