  2. Athens and Sparta • The two biggest, most populated city-states in ancient Greece • Allied together to fight against the Persians • Culturally, they were extremely different from each other

Athens • The Philosophical, Cultural and Artistic Capital of Greece • Valued freedom and education • Made advances in Science, Medicine, Math • Produced great thinkers like Socrates, Plato and Aristotle • Constructed great works of architecture • Women were second class citizens, everything was run by men

  4. Sparta • A city state dedicated to warfare • All Spartan men worked as soldiers. All other jobs were done by slaves called Helots. • From a very young age boys left home to begin military training • Military service was mandatory until the age of 60 • Women had freedom of movement and played important roles in household affairs
