Getting Started • Download the free version compatible with your computer. • Launch the application. • Depending on how you installed, the application will be on your toolbar or • will look like a little sun in the corner of your screen. • Select the first “ray of sun” that looks like the plus sign. This is the “Capture” tool. • A set of crossbars will appear for you to select the part of your screen that you • want to share with your audience. • Once you select your viewing area, a toolbar will appear on the bottom left. • Select the option depending if you want to capture an image or create a video.

  4. Capturing an Image • Click and drag your mouse to select the area you wish to capture. • When you let go, your selected area will appear with a toolbar. • Select “Capture an Image” at the bottom of the window.

  5. Capturing an Image • Along the left side are tools to use: • Insert an arrow • Insert text • Frame • Highlight • Select color • Along the bottom you can: • Upload to screencast.com • Change the name of the file • Save • Copy • Cancel

Capturing a Video • Click and drag your mouse to select the area you wish to capture. • When you let go, your selected area will appear with a toolbar. • Select “Capture a Video” at the bottom of the window. • A 3-second countdown will begin • A message will let you know your mic is on • The recording is running while the reel tape on the sides is moving • You may stop or pause the recording & also mute the mic • You can also choose to restart the recording process if you goof

  8. Capturing a Video • When you finish a recording and hit the stop button: • The Jing Preview screen will appear and you can play back your creation • You can give the file a new name • You can upload to screencast.com • Save • Cancel

Jing Pros and Cons • Pros • Free! • Works on both Mac and PC platforms • Easy to download, learn, and use • Allows for both image capture and video (screen) capture • Can pause the recording if it is easier to complete in pieces • Cons • Video recording is one big recording. • If you mess up, you have to start over from the beginning. • Recordings may be 5 minutes max • Recording stops automatically at 5 minutes

  11. Final Thoughts Jing is a great tool for beginners to use for image capture or screencasting. It is a free product that can be used on both Macs and PCs with very little instruction needed to begin using properly and successfully. While it may bother people that they cannot edit out mistakes, video capture cannot exceed five minutes and therefore re-recording should not take much time. If these needs are too basic, perhaps it is time to upgrade to Jing Pro or a most robust application like Camtasia.
