  3. Points of the Compass & Degrees North B A Activity: If you are at point A and want to get to point B, what direction do you need to go in? How many degrees is that? Pack 2

  4. 6 figure Grid References What is the 6 figure grid reference of the smiley face? Remember to find the position going across first: 523 Then going up: 225 So the grid reference of the smiley face is: 523, 225 23 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1  22 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 21 53 51 52 Pack 2

  5. 31 30 29 28 27 39 38 40 41 42 43 6 figure Grid References Grid lines on OS maps are thin blue lines, and the first 2 grid numbers are shown in big blue letters. OS maps do not show the fine grid required for the 3rd number and the 6th number. To get the 3rd and the 6th digit of a 6 figure grid reference you have to estimate how far along and how far up the point is within the grid square. Or you can measure it using the corner of a compass. Pack 2

  6. 6 figure Grid References – Measuring Accurately 2. Read the measurement where the blue grid line to the left of the point of interest crosses the compass. (2) 42 41 40 1. Place the corner of the compass on the location you want to find the grid reference of (in this example it’s the Aston Memorial Hall) 30 29 3. Read the measurement where the blue grid line below the point of interest crosses the compass. (5) 28 4. The full 6 figure grid reference of the memorial hall is: 412, 295 41 27 Pack 2

  7. 6 figure Grid References – Estimating Sometimes it’s quicker and easier to estimate the 3rd and 6th digit of the 6 figure grid reference. 42 41 40 30 By imagining halving the grid square, and then halving that again you can see the memorial hall isn’t quite a quarter the way alone the grid square so you can estimate the 3rd digit (2) The Aston Memorial hall is about half way up the grid square, so you get the 6th digit (5) Estimated: 412, 295 About half height (5) 29 About half again (2.5) About half width (5) 28 Full width Activity: Try estimating and measuring the grid reference of the school in Aston. 27 Pack 2

  8. Estimating Distances 31 Each grid square is 1km wide and 1km high (1km=1000metres) 1km 1km 30 • Activity: • Estimate how far it is from • Aston Hall Farm 407,298 • To • Weston Church 397, 276 • if you go in a straight line • You go on the roads 29 28 27 39 38 40 41 42 Pack 2
