  5. What does this “game” tell us about gender? • Physical attractiveness defined by and in relation to men. • Related to “natural” characteristics. • Enforced by others through bullying and harassment. • Internalized as individualized failure

  6. Does the woman in the clip have “false gender consciousness”? • “False consciousness”: an internalization of ruling ideas. • Critical point: “Taking off the blinders” benefits subordinate/marginalized groups.

  7. What is gender? Gender is a collection of norms, practices, and relations that (1) split the world into two mutually exclusive categories (masculinity/femininity) and (2) reward some people while punishing others.

  13. But do all women do the same kind of gender work? How does “natural Kate” compare to the “fair & lovely” journalist?

  14. Work…that pays off? The “Beauty Bias”: • “The less attractive you are in America, the more likely you are to receive a longer prison sentence, a lower damage award, a lower salary, and poorer performance reviews. You are less likely to be married and more likely to be poor” (Bennett 2010, summarizing Rhode 2010). • Hirsch found that among immigrants to the US, the impact of being “one shade lighter” on income was equivalent to one year of education. • Men are not exempt! • These dynamics are global.
