  2. You Will Need… • Your two paragraphs • Your athlete note cards and articles • Your two gods note cards Put your bibliography cards to the side for now.

  3. Step 1 – Begin Writing • Start with your thesis statement. This is the sentence that states the thesis (or controlling idea of the whole paper). It’s essential. • The thesis statement is placed as the last sentence of your introduction. • You can write the introduction later; just write your thesis NOW. The Greek gods I chose as her inspiration are Poseidon and Themis.

  4. Step 2: Your 1st Body Paragraph Begin by talking about your athlete (on the field) and then make the connection to the god: IsabellWerth is a champion horsewoman. Born in Rheinberg, Germany, in 1969, she grew up surrounded by “ponies” (Sewell, para. 3). The period goes outside the parentheses at the end of the sentence. This is a fact that you had to get from somewhere so it’s time to cite your source, using a parenthetical citation.

  5. IsabellWerth is a champion horsewoman. Born in Rheinberg, Germany, in 1969, she grew up surrounded by “ponies” (Sewell, para. 3). She has won eight Olympic gold medals and fourteen European champion medals (Sewell, para. 2). That is why Poseidon would be her inspiration. This is another fact that you had to get from somewhere so it’s time to cite your source, using a parenthetical citation. Now you make the connection between your athlete and the god.

  7. That should be it for my first body paragraph. I’ve said what I need to say, but it’s not a good idea to end a paragraph with a quote or paraphrase if I can avoid it, so let me come up with a little conclusion for the paragraph……

If IsabellWerth were an ancient Greek Olympian, she would have been championed by Poseidon. So I write a little conclusion for the first body paragraph.

  9. Step 3: Write the 2nd Body Paragraph IsabellWerth studied law, and completed her law degree in 2000. She was soon employed by the Oexmann law firm at Hamm (Sewell par. 10). My second paragraph is about Werth OUT of the ARENA. While doing research, I read that she studied law so her love of law is the part of her personality I will focus on for this paragraph. But notice how abruptly my paragraph begins. This paragraph should be connected somehow to the first paragraph. Since in the last paragraph I was talking about horses… I need a transition line. Something that will make the connection from horses to law.

  10. This sentence makes a nice transition from the first body paragraph to the second body paragraph. Werth is more than just a horsewoman, however, she also has an interest in law. She studied law, and completed her law degree in 2000. She was soon employed by the Oexmann law firm at Hamm (Sewell par. 10). If this were ancient Greece, the goddess Themis would have blessed Werth with the talents of a lawyer. Themis was a Titan, one of the original gods who governed the universe before the birth of Zeus. She was the goddess of divine law (“Themis,” para. 1). She taught man the rules of worshiping the gods, holding an assembly, and behaving in society. She held government officials to a high level of moral behavior (“Themis,” para. 1). If Werth were an ancient Greek, her love for the law would be from Themis. Now I am going to write about one of Werth’s interests OUTSIDE THE ARENA. And now I explain how my second god could have inspired Werth.

  11. That’s thethesisand the body of my paper. The hard part is done, and I can take a break. I am now ready to write my conclusion. When I am finished I will have a four paragraph essay: Introduction Body Paragraph 1 Body Paragraph 2 Conclusion The very last laststep will beto write the Works Cited page which I will show you how to do in classon Monday. Bring your project envelope with all notes, note cards, the articles, and bibliography cards, and of course, your paper. See you Monday.
