Danger & need for protection led to people working on others land for protection. • These people became known as SERFS, who were laborers, paid taxes, farmed & more for protection. • The protectors had soldiers & small armies that could protect the people for their loyalty (or fealty) & service. • The protectors became known as nobles, lords, vassals, or knights & owned the land serfs worked on. • The land was called a MANOR • A manor had everything it needed & no one needed to leave it, this is called self-sufficient. = safe
