Coalition of Sailors Against Destructive Decisions Program Information Sheet Month: August 2012 Topic: Spice and New Age Drug Awareness Point of Contact: NADAPDrug Detection and Deterrence Program Phone Number: (901) 874-4204 Topic Discussion: The use of “Spice” and New Age Drugs has become an emerging problem in the Navy. Using these drugs is behavior inconsistent with the Navy’s Core Values. The Navy maintains a “Zero Tolerance” stance on use of these new ages drugs, regardless of their availability to be purchased legally. Getting caught using them or distributing them will end your military career.

Know the Facts: • Use and/or possession of Spice is illegal for all service members and is punishable under the Uniform Code of Military Justice. • Spice causes elevated blood pressure, tremors, seizures, vomiting, abdominal pain and more. • The chemical blends are continuously manipulated and the strength of the synthetic chemical used is unknown; therefore, there is no way to know what you are ingesting or what the long-term health risks are if used.  • Spice can negatively impact your paycheck, rank, Naval career, and your health. The choice is yours

What is Spice? • Product line marketed as aromatic or herbal incense • Sold in Europe since 2006, possibly as early as 2004 • “Not for human consumption” • Keeps spice out of purview of FDA • All ingredients don’t have to be listed • Already a significant problem in the European Union (EU) • Spice (and/or synthetic cannabinoid ingredients) banned in or being considered for ban in much of EU and Japan
