  1. Novel Gain Materials and Devices Based on III-N-V compoundsCOST Action: MP0805 Chair of the Action: Naci Balkan; balkan@essex.ac.uk School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering University of Essex, UK Scientific Officer: Caroline Whelan; cwhelan@cost.esf.org http://www.essex.ac.uk/dces/COST_MP805/index.html

  2. 1.The Action Aim To set up a network of European researchers active in the field of the novel semiconductor III-N-V gain materials also known as dilute nitrides and indium-rich GaxIn1-xN The COST Action provides: More coordinated and focused approach Networking and capacity building activities Training European Competitiveness

  3. B. Scientific Focus and Work Plan The objectives: Advancement on novel gain materials based on III-V-N semiconductors and GaInN Train early career scientists and promote collaborative work serve to spread technology Increase competitiveness of European Electronics and Optoelectronics industries

  4. Objectives will be achieved via four tasks: Growth of dilute nitrides for optimised devices Development of indium rich InxGa 1-xN alloys Understanding band structure, optical and electronic properties of III-N-V compounds Growth characterisation and demonstration of novel devices (Provisions for the inclusion of new participants and unforeseen activities) Tasks are carried out by four work groups: Growth and materials development Materials and Physical Characterisation Devices Theory and Modelling

  5. 5. Organization and Coordination Issues The Action has 5 aspects to the coordination and organisation to realise its aims. Management: MC chaired by the Action Chairperson will steer and oversee the activities Action specific web site: maintained by a manager (iii) Coordination of networking and capacity building activities: Carried out by the four WGs managed by the chairpersons (iv) Coordination of meetings and workshops: Kick off meeting, MC meetings, WG workshop meetings, training schools Deliverables and Milestones: 3 and 6 monthly milestones with well-defined deliverables will be established.

  6. 6. Dissemination Interest groups Three broad interest groups targeted are: Academia, research institutes and semiconductor industry (manufacturers and service providers) 2.   Other COST Actions, early career researchers and other researchers working in the field, and potential graduate students 3. General public, standards bodies, government agencies, European-level policy makers, regional planners and policy makers

  7. B- Dissemination Routes A dedicated interactive web site has been set up with two levels of access: Publicly accessible and Password-protected http://www.essex.ac.uk/dces/COST_MP805/index.html An email network has been established Scheduled meetings WG- workshops. Seminars and conferences have started being organised by the MC 4. Training schoolsand training events have also being organised (Next one: 7-9 October 2009 Delphi, Greece).

  8. C- Dissemination Monitoring Continuous monitoring of the following indicators Increased number of European scientific workshops and conferences led by scientists in the Action Increase in the collaborative work and joint publications between the collaborators Increase in distribution of information and documentation of scientific data and material via the dedicated WEB site Increased number of available PhD and MSc projects in the field (v) Increased number of STSMs and participants for training events.

  9. 8. Timetable and Economic dimension A. Networking and capacity building activities and research Years 1-4: Carried out by WG1, 2, 3 and 4: WG chairs are collating information about individual groups’ potential contributions B. Other Activities and deliverables Year 1: (Already Achieved) (i) Kick off meeting 7 April 2009 (ii) Scientific Kick off, MC /WG meetings &Workshop; 24 May 2009 : Essex: 51 Participants; 15 Oral presentations; 18 Poster Presentations Workshop proceedings published electronically. 4 STSMs have been realised More MC, WG and workshops are planned

  10. Years 2/3: (i) Organise two workshop meetings (ii) Organise one training school on specific themes (iii) Organise one training activity (iv) 2 MC meetings (vii)Annual report, workshop proceedings, STSM reports,WG meetings Year4: (i) Organise one large meeting of WGs as final workshop (ii) Organise one training activity (iii) Organise one training school on specific themes (iv) Organise one international conference (v)2 MC meetings (vi)workshop proceedings, STSM reports, WG meetings, conference proceedings & Final Report

  11. The following COST countries are participating in the Action Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Ireland, Lithuania, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Denmark, Switzerland, Turkey, Israel, Iceland, United Kingdom. On the basis of national estimates provided by the 52 representatives of these countries, the economic dimension of the activities to be carried out under the Action has been estimated, in 2008 prices, at >28 million Euros.
