  6. T4L K-6 – 2009 (continued) An indicative figure for your 2009 allocation: Divide your enrolment by 32 (1:8 over 4 years) Increase that number by 20% P5 and P6 schools are expected to receive their entire 4 year allocation in 2009 to replace the computers received in 2005 Plus 20% Note: Figures will vary according to changes in enrolment – 2009 census data is used

  7. T4L 7-12 – 2009 (continued) • An indicative figure for your 2009 allocation: • Divide your enrolment by 32 (1:8 over 4 years) • This is expected to be unchanged from previous T4L program • Note: Figures will vary according to changes in enrolment – 2009 census data will be used.

  8. T4L – 2009 (continued) • No decision has been made regarding which semester of 2009 that Sydney Region schools will be supplied • Hunter Region was originally supplied with Optima PC’s on T4L rollout. • As Optima has closed, Hunter region is a Priority for Semester 1. • However once allocations have been sent out to schools there will be a short turn around time required. • Warranties will be extended on all 2005 Rollout desktops, notebooks and servers, until the 2009 Rollout has occurred.

  9. T4L – 2009 (continued) • Vendors: • Desktops • Lenovo (2 Models), Apple (still to be finalised) • Laptops • Acer (2 new models), Apple (still to be finalised) • Servers • Dell (2 Models), Apple (still to be finalised) • It is expected that in 2010 the L4L learning device will be available on T4L rollout.

  10. T4L Software Delivery • A final announcement on this has not yet been made but it is likely that: • DET SOE will be delivered via the CPC’s and Altiris • Devices will receive base OS image followed by specific drivers and appropriate application layers. • This approach will be used to rebuild older PCs as well.

  11. Advantages of SOE Layering • Images are much smaller and therefore much quicker to deploy • Target software as required: • K-6 software on K-6 computers • 7-12 software on 7-12 computers • Staff software on staff computers • It is expected schools will be able to initiate reimaging via the CPC themselves

  19. Preparing for your school’s I.C. • If your school has not yet been scheduled, you can at least identify suitable rooms: • Front wall must be unobstructed (flat) solid wall space of minimum 3.6m wide by 2.8m high • Room to cater for at least 30 students • Power and data outlets must be on the front wall. Power outlet must be on back wall • Room must be accessible by all (i.e. not a particular teacher’s classroom). Consider disabled access as well

  20. Preparing for your school’s I.C. • Room should be secure(decent locks door/ windows) • Consider existing ambient noise levels • Location of room (eg. beside COLA?) • Carpet on floor? • Library/Computer labs may not be suitable due to loss of access when a VC needs to be run • Long rooms can be a problem for the rear camera/microphones • If you need to build a wall, ask a TA for advice ASAP • When selecting your Connected Classroom, consider future – not current – requirements

  27. Term 1 2009 ICT Update T4L Rollout Interactive Classrooms Project Jeopardy Tournament – Stage 3 Discretionary Purchase of ICT equipment Student and Staff Email and Accounts School Servers Digital Education Revolution Laptops for Learning Sydney Region ICT Initiatives

  28. Discretionary Purchases NSW DET has contracts for the purchase of: Computers (Desktops/Notebooks/Servers) Network Ethernet Switches & Data Cabling Printers (Inkjet/Mono/Colour Laser/ Multifunction) Copiers (Mono/Colour) Interactive Whiteboards Data Projectors Video Conferencing Equipment Schools MUST purchase these types of equipment from the approved and contracted suppliers All exceptions must be justifiable when schools are audited http://tinyurl.com/ictstandards (NOTE: DET Intranet link only) http://tinyurl.com/detprocure (NOTE: DET Intranet link only)

  29. Discretionary Purchases • Due to changes to the exchange rate, many contract prices have changed • Servers, notebooks and IWB bundles have increased • For IWB bundles, multiple discount now available - (3+ purchased at same time)

  30. Discretionary Purchases – IWB Bundles • Discretionary Installation of IWB + Projector (bundles) now include: • The breakout box which provides connection point for computer, Video input, USB connection. • These connections are placed under board – not on side wall or at back of room (at teacher’s desk for example) • A swap out service to replace equipment that is not working, saving schools time and resources • Common site variations encountered in the installation process are now included in the standard price. This will reduce the impact at the time of installation in both time and cost. (this is still to be clarified) • NOTE: PURCHASED via DET ICT FLEET MANAGER

  31. Discretionary Purchases – IWB Bundles • Placement of Computer for IWB • Many teachers are still think in “presentation mode” rather than “interactive mode” • When you work with the IWB, you are AT the IWB, not at your computer • USB has a cable distance limitation of 5m • Computer needs to be accessible to enter passwords etc • Computer therefore needs to be at front of room.

  32. Discretionary Purchases – Computers Desktops(Lenovo): Base Model $739 / Advanced Model $964 ex GST Notebooks(Acer Extensa 5630 - Vendor is Winthrop): Base Model $1124 / Advanced Model $1300 / Tablet PC $1650 ex GST Servers(DELL): Do NOT buy a server until you contact Greg Sharkey for advice as there are options available NOTE: PURCHASED via each separate VENDOR

  33. Just an Aside – Donated Computers Discretionary Purchase computers are shipped with a licenced copy of the DET SOE Computers donated by parents or the community ARE NOT automatically licenced to have the DET SOE installed (so please don’t ask us to) Ex-TAFE computers that we receive from time to time and pass onto schools ARE licenced for the DET SOE If school communities want to buy computers for the school, ask them to buy DET contracted computers

  34. Discretionary Purchases – Printers/Faxes/Copiers InkJet Printers(Ricoh): Prices range from $173 to $955 ex GST Laser & Multifunction Printers(HP): Prices range from $385 to $4,664 ex GST Fax Machines(Canon): Prices range from $345 to $1,670 ex GST Photo Copiers(Fuji Xerox): Prices range from $3,437 to $44,165 ex GST Choose your printers based on your actual usage requirements. Exceeding the monthly duty cycle can void your warranty!!! NOTE: PURCHASED via DET ICT FLEET MANAGER

  35. Discretionary Purchases – Printers/Faxes/Copiers - Installation On-site Installation is included with networkable printers and photocopiers It is important that when the installer arrives they are provided with appropriate network details: An available STATIC IP Address, the Subnet Mask, Gateway and DNS settings for your school. The installers WILL NOT create a Print Queue on your school fileserver An available network outlet and Patch Lead will be required If your copier provides “Scan to File” facilities, you’ll need server name, username, password and sharename for an appropriate folder. Be prepared! Ask Stu, Greg or Rob for assistance with this– but please do not ask on the day of installation 

  36. Discretionary Purchases – HOW? NOTE: Apple Contracts are still to be finalised – Ph 133 622

  39. Student and Staff Email & Accounts Student and Staff (web)email changed at the end of 2008 Staff email is based on Exchange 2009 Student email is based on Google’s Gmail Learning resources to assist users with using these email systems can be found at this DET Intranet site –http://tinyurl.com/detemail Accessing student addresses and class mailing groups / Accessing staff addresses / Guides for Windows/Mac / Video and Comic Tutorials for students

  40. Email, Spam and Phishing Many school staff are complaining about Spam and Phishing emails arriving in their mailbox Spam & Phishing are a fact of life and we must be aware The vast majority of email arriving at NSW DET’s mail server is NOT legitimate email We only see a trickle of Spam that the filters miss If you receive Spam, you can forward it to “abuse” or just delete it. Teach your staff that no-one will legitimately email them asking for personal details – this is Phishing. Advice for Dealing with Spam can be found at this DET Intranet site –http://tinyurl.com/detspam

  41. DET User Account Management The “Account Management” option under My Applications in the DET Staff Portal is now removed Password management for Student Accounts is now handled by EMU in My Applications Password management for Staff Accounts is now handled by SMU in My Applications Access to EMU and SMU is not automatic for all staff, it must be granted by the Principal or delegate using AMU Internet Filtering (Block/Unblock) and Web Filter Check is now a separate option in My Applications

  42. Student Account Management - EMU

  43. Student Account Management - EMU

  45. Local Windows Accounts and EduWeb Sydney Region IT Services Unit currently directly manages 160 servers in our public schools New accounts required for new users have mostly been processed EduWeb 2009 installations are continuing as we speak for those schools that requested it EduWeb installations will be finalised in all of these schools by the end of term 1. Please direct any questions on the status of this process for your school to Stu Hasic.

  46. Any Questions on Accounts?

  48. Your School Server(s) • Most schools would find it very difficult to operate if their server ceased functioning • SRITSU recommends that School Servers are in warranty • As they run out, plan to buy a new one • If you received your server: • Before 2005 – Not covered by warranty • in 2005 - Warranty will expire this year • After 2005 – 4 Year warranty still covers

  49. School Servers • Servers need on-site warranty to ensure prompt repair if hardware issues occur • Servers out of warranty may lead to expensive repair bills which may not be cost-effective • All Discretionary Purchase and T4L servers are supplied with priority 4-hour response time for hardware failure for four years • Replaced servers may still be useful for non-critical functions such as AD and data backup

  50. Preparing for a New School Server Many schools ordered a server in 2005 when T4L started and their server is now 4 years old During 2009, these schools should either order a new T4L server, or buy one with school funds Since then, servers have changed from 32-bit to 64-bit processors meaning that some changes are necessary when updating. These include: New Logon scripts, Changes to Fileshares Changes to Print Queues and Group Policies SRITSU can assist with your changeover Expect two to three days of downtime during changeover
