IOP IOP IOP IOP IOP IOP IOP IOP IOP IOP IOP IOP IOP IOP IOP IOP ATM Advanced Fabric Architecture • Fabric distributed over Cell Switching Modules (CSMs), MPM-C and Frame Cell Switching Module (FCSM) • i.e., there is no central switch fabric Distributed switching fabric Input/Output processor and buffering

  9. Scalable Fabric Capacity • fabric capacity increases as modules are added • low entry cost • economical expansion Fabric capacity (Gbps) # of OC-3c/STM-1 ports

  10. X-Cell: Advanced Fabric Architecture Buffer Memory (2.048M Cells) • Distributed Input Buffered with Output Control (DIBOC) • logically identical to output buffered switch Input Ports Output Ports Fabric (13.2G)

  11. X-Cell’s buffer management • Characteristics • Dynamic Input Buffered with Output Control (DIBOC) • 6 classes of service: CBR PRS, CBR, rt-VBR, nrt-VBR, UBR • very large cell buffers: 128K per OC12c/STM-4c port • thresholds and discarding mechanisms: EPD, PPD and RED • Implementation • Input state and the output state of IOP ASIC

  12. Massive cell buffer capacity • Very high PER PORT cell buffer capacity • 25M: 1,024 • OC3c/STM-1 8,192 • OC12c/STM-4c 131,072 • That’s 1,048,576 cell buffer capacity in Omni-5x/5Wx & 2,097,152 cell buffer capacity in Omni-9x/9Wx! • Essential for LAN applications • ATM switches must absorb very large, momentary traffic bursts without discarding cells • Essential for LAN-to-WAN access • ATM switches must flow-control campus ATM traffic to lower-speed wide area transmission

  13. OmniSwitch Modules

  14. MPM-C • Features: • Management processor module for OmniSwitch ATM • Does not require any FCSM2. • Out-band Management Ethernet port. • Support redundant MPM-C. • ATM Switching only, no Frame modules can be installed in the OmniSwitch • Up to 32 MB Flash (8) • Up to 128 MB Dram (32) • 256 MB SDRAM (64) • Faster CPU: uses a SPARCLite 860 running at 160Mhz

  15. MPM-C • Benefits: • Cost Effective solution when building an ATM Network. • No need for additional FCSM. • Single slot solution provides higher port density: 64 OC-3 or 16 OC-12. • In-band management can be provided by: • one LANE Client, • or one Ptop service, • or one CIP service. • Performance is 170 calls/sec.

  16. MPM-III • Same as for MPM-1G • but more power, • and more memory • Features • Ethernet out-band management port • Up to 32 MB Flash (8) • Up to 128 MB Dram (32) • 256 MB SDRAM (64) • Uses a SPARCLite 860 running at 160Mhz • Performance is 250call/s in ATM • Supports the new HRE-VX • Can not be in the same chassis with an MPM-1G !!! • MPM-III supports redundancy

  17. Multi-layer switching: HRE-VX • All forwarding of IP and IPX packets in ASICs • Reduces latency • Standard routing protocols • RIP • RIP II • OSPF • BGP4 • IP Multicast • DVMRP • BootP Relay • DHCP Relay Management Processor module (MPM) HRE

  18. CSM-U+ and adapter boards • Universal Cell Switching Module with optional daughter cards • CSM-U+ module has 3 available slots • mix and match different daughter cards • 155Mbps - MMF, SMF (intermediate and long reach support), and UTP Cat 5 physical interfaces • DS3 and E3 • DS1, E1, • CE-T1, CE-E1 • IMA-T1, IMA-E1 • Benefits • provides more flexibility when designing ATM network configurations provides interfaces to lower speed ATM networks (i.e. 1.544Mbps, 2.048Mbps, 45Mbps, 34Mbps, and Circuit Emulation support) • 15 bits VPI/VCI

  19. Cell Switching Modules • CSM-155-8 (single mode or multimode) • eight SC connectorized fiber ports that support OC-3 connections at 155 Mbps

  21. The Frame Cell Switching Module (FCSM-II) • Features • internal link connecting the frame bus and cell matrix • supports comprehensive LAN to ATM internetworking • performs the Segmentation and Re-assembly function (SAR)

  22. Ethernet modules (10/100BaseTx) • Half or Full duplex 100BaseTx ports • double the 100Mbps speed to 200 Mbps -- good for short backbones and high-speed server connections • Dynamic buffer allocation • helps ensures no loss of data in heavy traffic loads • Auto-sensing 10/100 ports (32 and 12 ports)
