  1. OmniSwitch 6250 Competitive Overview Bob Purvis August 2009

  2. 6250 Competitive Overview Criteria • 5 vendors were chosen for this competitive analysis • Cisco, D-link, Extreme, HP, Nortel • All analysis is based on datasheet, website, user guides information • Models chosen • Any fast ethernet product in vendor’s portfolio • Models can be standalone or stackable • Models can support either L2 alone or both L2\L3 • Pricing based on CDW listings • This equates to approximately a 3035% discount off of price list pricing • Power Consumptions • Based on all ports active @ 100 % full throughput • Vendor power based on datasheet data • Alcatel-Lucent Differentiators • See separate expanded “ALU differentiators” slide

  3. Alcatel-Lucent Differentiators (expanded) • Two simple enterprise models to choose from vs many by the competitors: reduces sparing and inventory costs • Scalable and flexible 416 ports per stack using 24 port non-PoE and PoE models (384 FE ports, 32 GE in a 8U space) • Dedicated-Redundant 5-GigE full duplex stacking capability up to 16 systems (mixed models) • Supports basic routing (static and RIP routing) provided with base system and includes IPv6. Simplified offer - no separate L2 and L3 models. • Virtual chassis management forup to 16 units of mixed models managed via single IP address • Low power consumption for eco-sustainability (see competitive analysis presentation) • Optimized form factor and low noise output ideal for co-location environments • PoE support: 802.3af and 802.3at standard max of 30W per port, up to available power budget. • One SW level based on feature rich AOS operating system to meet the needs of any: small-medium enterprise edge or branch office enterprise workgroups • Limited Lifetime Hardware and Software Warranty included with the product.

  4. Cisco CE-500 and 2960 families • Overview/Strengths: • Dominant market share • Two levels of SW: • Lan Lite (5 models), LAN Base (9 models) • L2 only for both software levels • Free SW updates via web • Free, easy config CNA management tool for SMB networks, single IP management up to 16 units • Supports 10/100 and triple speed models with same operating system • Industry standard CLI • Weaknesses: • 2960: Only L2, no dedicated stacking links • 14 family models at various pricing & feature level vs two OS6250 models • Throughput performance less than equivalent OS6250 models (24 port models) • No IPv6 support in base image, only IPv6 management • 802.1X multiple host: When a port is enabled for multiple users, and a host that is connected to that port is authorized successfully, any host (with any MAC address) isallowed to send and receive the traffic on that port • 802.1X multiple auth: No Guest VLAN and ports go into the port VLAN and will not go into a RADIUS-assigned VLAN

  5. DLink 10/100 models • What – Managed 10/100 Fixed LAN Enterprise Switches • 10/100 standalone and stackable, low cost switches • Layer 2 data access switching, with security, performance, and resiliency • Models: DES-3000 (7 models), DES3200 (2 models), DES-3500 (3 models), DES-3800 (1 model) • Strengths: • Pricing • Stacking up to 16 or 32 units depending on xStack models • Lifetime warranty • Weaknesses: • 14 10/100 models with various pricing & feature sets vs two OS6250 models • L3 only on DES-3828P model, limited to 32 static routes • Limited IPv6 support across all model • LLDP, port binding, trunking, VLANs, supported only on specific models • DoS (called safeguard) only available on specific models • QOS: 4 or 8 queues only available on specific models • No dedicated high speed stacking ports. • Appears only stacking between same model

  6. Extreme x150 and x250 families • What – x150 is an L2 Fixed FE Standalone Switch • x250 is an L3 Fixed FE Stackable Switch • Strengths: • x250 supports 10G stacking • Rich feature set with base purchase • Supports loadable software modules reduces downtime • Advanced L3 (OSPF, PIM, PBR) upgrade option • Full IPv6 support for management, switching and routing • Fiber model within the family • Weaknesses: • Many 10/100 models: 3 x150 models and 4 x250 models • x150 standalone: no stacking, layer 2 only • x150 and x250 models cannot be mixed • 8 K Mac Entries & 1 K ACL rules vs 16k Mac Entries & 2k ACL rules • Higher acoustic levels: 37dbA-45dbA vs 0dbA-<35dbA

  7. HP ProCurve2500, 2510, 2610, 3500 families • What – Fast Ethernet Stackable Enterprise Switches • Low-cost 10/100 Ethernet switches for small to medium enterprises • Basic enterprise feature set • Secure, performance, advanced traffic monitoring and prioritization • ProCurve 3500 (New-July 1, 2009):Four 10/100 models (-24/48, -24/48-PoE) • Strengths: • Good market share due to pricing and free support offerings • Ability to manage a virtual stack of 16 units • Stacking supported across any ProCurve model • Free hardware return and software support for life of product. • IPv6 ready on 3500 family (only this model) • Large routing/MAC table on 3500 models • Advanced routing SW upgrade option on 3500 family • Improved web user authentication\server load balancing\IPv6 support\Web Management\QOS • Weaknesses: • 11 models (12  48 port models) various pricing to match the two OS6250 models • No IPv6 support • No-stack redundancy or dedicated stacking port • No all fiber model • Higher power consumption on most models, especially 3500 family! • Higher pricing on the more flexible 3500 family vs OmniSwitch

  8. Nortel 2500 and 4500 families • What - Stackable Enterprise Edge Switches • 2500 – L2 - 10/100 models • 4500 – L2 - 10/100 models, mixed stackable with 4500 10/100/1000 models • Low cost with resiliency, security and convergence-readiness • Strengths: • Mixed 10/100 Fast Ethernet switches stackable (2500 family) • Mixed 10/100 and 10/100/1000 models stackable (4500 family) • Dedicated high speed stacking ports • Resilient stacking up to 8 units for each family • Weaknesses: • Limited to 8k MAC table per stack element • Limited QOS capability on 2500 family • 256 VLAN support • IPv6 management and VLAN only • Higher power consumption and acoustic levels
