  6. REGION= An area with at least one common characteristic that makes it different than its surrounding area. Corn belt Middle East

  7. Regions may be created around a wide variety of characteristics. • Agricultural • Geographical • Religious • Physical • Political • Social • Technological Appalachian Mountain • Region

  8. OTHER EXAMPLES: Technological SILICON VALLEY An area in N. California where many technological companies have set up headquarters.

  9. RELIGIOUS The Bible Belt: • An area in the USA with a strong belief in Protestantism

  10. POLITICAL • USA POLTICAL MAP: Red and Blue States

  11. SOCIAL • Cheesehead Region Raider Nation

  13. LOCATION: This theme asks “”where is it?” and can be defined in two ways: 1)Absolute location and 2)Relative Location

  14. Absolute Location deals with exact location using latitude and longitude lines

  15. LATITUDE/LONGITUDE REVIEW • Latitude = Horizontal Lines, Measures 0-90 N and 0-90 S, Parallel, Always written first, Equator, Tropic Lines, Artic and Antarctic Circles • Longitude= Vertical Lines, Measures 0-180 E and 0-180 W, Meet at the Poles, Always written second, Prime Meridian

  18. RELATIVE LOCATION: Tells where a site is in relationship to other places • Examples: • “Next to Burger King..” • “In Between my house and the park…” • “North of Wasden Elementary…” • “Around the corner fromTaco Bell..” • “On the crossroads of Charleston and Rainbow”
