Marketing & Communications: Increase demand for Australian Wagyu domestically and internationally in all sectors of the supply chain. Corporate Services: Increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the AWA administration.
  5. Corporate Goal 1: Genetic Improvement: Registrations Source: ARCBA Registration Report 31/12/2012
  6. Registration fees Animal registration fees scaled to encourage large herd registration. Freed up genepool - use any registered bull as a sire (no AI Sire requirement) Free bull transfers
  7. BREEDPLAN fees Free BREEDPLAN access: BREEDPLAN enrolment fee included in membership subscription. BREEDPLAN performance data entry included in animal registration fees.
  8. BREEDPLAN performance recording Source: SBTS 2012/13 Completeness of Performance Report – avg. for 2007 – 2011 calving
  9. BREEDPLAN performance recording Source: SBTS 2012/13 Completeness of Performance Report
  10. BREEDPLAN performance recording Source: SBTS 2012/13 Completeness of Performance Report
  11. BREEDPLAN performance recording Source: SBTS 2012/13 Report to MLA
  12. Wagyu CollaborativeGenetics Research Project Objectives: Stage 1 Dec 2012 – Oct 2013 1. Utilise genomics for Wagyu parent verification and performance analysis. KPI 1: SNP chip test prototyped by July 2013. 2. Improve the accuracy of carcass scoring of Wagyu full bloods and cross bred carcases through the use of new digital imaging technology. KPI 2: The Japanese Digital Camera to be recording marbling and other carcase data in three (3) of the key abattoirs processing Wagyu full bloods by Sept 2013.
  13. Wagyu CollaborativeGenetics Research Project Milestone 1 – Stage 1 MDC funding approved – due 19/12/2012. Completed MLA MDC Donor Co. funding agreement signed 19th December 2012.  Milestone 2 – Genetics Company and platform selected and pricing agreed – due 3/2/2013 Completed. University of Queensland Animal Genetics Laboratory (UQAGL) Service Agreement signed 22 May 2013.
  14. Wagyu CollaborativeGenetics Research Project Milestone 3 – AWA AI sires (and ET dams) HD genotyped and LD chip produced for Wagyu – due 1/3/2013 Completed. Selected GeneSeek Genetic Profiler LD 10K (now 20K) SNP for low density SNP profiling and included in UQAGL Services Agreement. 132 high profile and high usage Fullblood sires and some ET dams 800K SNP genotyped by Geneseek. 32 of these had previously been 800K genotyped in 2011, with 100 being 800K genotyped through this project
  15. Wagyu CollaborativeGenetics Research Project Milestone 4 – Digital camera operational in three key Wagyu processing abattoirs – due 30/1/2013. Completed.  Camera in operation at Pakenham VIC, Casino NSW and Beef City QLD (AACo) processing abattoirs. An average of 100 Fullblood carcase images per month are being taken by AWA at Pakenham and Casino.
  16. Wagyu CollaborativeGenetics Research Project Milestone 5 – Major producer cohorts, animal numbers and sire/dams identified and cohorts agreed for data collection – 30/1/2013. Completed. Almost all known Wagyu feedlots and processors have agreed to assist in providing DNA samples and allowing camera imaging. Imaging schedules have been developed for future kills of between 1 and 3 months ahead and tracking data capture.
  17. Wagyu CollaborativeGenetics Research Project Milestone 6 – Discovery Population cohort data (1000 records) collected and entered into AWA database – due 31/3/2013 Completed. Carcase image analysis originally conducted by Professor Keigo Kuchida at the Obihiro University of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine, Hokkaido Australian analysts trained and analysis now conducted in Australia providing much faster image analysis turn- around.
  18. Wagyu CollaborativeGenetics Research Project Milestone 7 – Discovery Population genotyped (1000 genotypes) – due 1/5/2013 Meat samples have been taken using SureTrack kits from almost all carcases which have been camera imaged and 213 low density genotypes completed. A further 311 samples are awaiting genotyping. DNA samples from the remainder of the animals from which AWA has obtained phenotypic records have been largely unavailable.
  19. Wagyu CollaborativeGenetics Research Project Milestone 8 – Discovery Population EBVs produced from combined genotypes and phenotypes – due 28/5/2013 Completed. AGBU has analysed the Discovery Population dataset to determine trait heritability’s, establish trial AUS-MEAT and digital camera carcase Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) and are identifying reasonable animal cohorts to be 20K SNP genotyped. Results to be presented by Dr Rob Banks, Director AGBU
  20. Wagyu CollaborativeGenetics Research Project Milestone 9 – Mid Term Report to AWA and MDC – due 15/6/2013 Completed. AWCGRP Budget and Actuals spreadsheet has been developed to track and report on financial projections and results.
  21. Wagyu CollaborativeGenetics Research Project For Milestones 3 – 6 and 9 Payments to suppliers: Budgeted $70,800 Actual $38,432 Expense Reimbursement Budgeted $71,750 Actual $51,299 Balance of unspent funds for project $20,450
  22. Wagyu CollaborativeGenetics Research Project Data capture to date: 2448 records with phenotypic information ie. a mixture of sire/dam/live weight/AUS-MEAT/camera analysed traits 1740 records have camera carcase analysed traits 213 have 20K SNP genotypes with another 311 DNA samples available ie potentially 533 SNP genotypes 1907 records loaded into the ABRI database and provided to AGBU for genetic analysis Of those 1302 have camera analysis data (200 more  available when we have their pedigrees).
  23. Wagyu CollaborativeGenetics Research Project Record loss through data harvesting approach: 22% loss of phenotype records through inadequate sire/dam information A further 14% loss of camera carcase analysis records through inadequate sire/dam information But only 22% of phenotype records have DNA samples available our “Achilles Heel”
  24. Wagyu CollaborativeGenetics Research Project Improved data collection approach: Optimal: Register calves destined for slaughter with DNA sample and NLIS for ongoing identification. Genotype to give pedigree linkage. Input weight data (200, 400, 600 day, feedlot entry/exit weights) At slaughter take DNA meat sample, capture camera image analysis and AUS-MEAT kill sheet data. Animals to be maintained in management groups through their lives to slaughter. If end point collection only: take DNA meat sample, capture camera image analysis and AUS-MEAT kill sheet data. Genotype for pedigree linkage.
  25. Wagyu CollaborativeGenetics Research Project Need to complete: Milestone 10 – Validation Population cohort data (1000 records) collected and entered into AWA database Milestone 11 – Validation Population genotyped (1000 genotypes) Milestone 12 – Effectiveness of Wagyu genomic test and Discovery Population EBVs established through Discovery population – Validation Population phenotype correlation Milestone 13 – Effectiveness of ultrasonic scanning prediction of Wagyu carcase traits determined through correlation of scanning to phenotypes Milestone 14 – Stage 2 planning approved by AWA Board and MDC Stage 2 application submitted Milestone 15 – Final Report to AWA and MDC
  26. Wagyu CollaborativeGenetics Research Project Objectives: Stage 2 late 2013 3. Identify future generations of high performance young Wagyu sires. KPI 3: First round of young sires selected for progeny testing end 2013. 4. Tailor the Wagyu BREEDPLAN analysis to best meet the needs of Australian Wagyu production. KPI 4: Review all Wagyu BREEDPLAN traits for effectiveness by 2015. 5. Encourage all Wagyu industry participants to measure the performance of their cattle and share the data for the advancement of the industry. KPI 5: 70% of the Australian full blood Wagyu population to be registered with AWA and analysed by Wagyu BREEDPLAN by 2017.
