  1. The Rapture1Thessalonians 4:13-18

  2. 1Thessalonians 4:13-18 13 But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. 14 For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with Him those who have fallen asleep. 15 For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16 For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord. 18 Therefore, encourage one another with these words.

  3. Outline • Definitions • Outline of the End Times • Deaths and Resurrections • Paul’s Purpose for This Passage? • Analyzing the Passage • When the Rapture Will Take Place? • Summary

  4. Definitions • First Coming: Incarnation, the God man Jesus is born • Rapture: Christ calls His Church and they meet Him in the air • Second Coming: Christ returns with His Church to reign during the millennial kingdom

  5. End Times

  6. Deaths and Resurrections • OT: one general resurrection and judgment; “I know that he [Lazarus] will rise again at the last day.” John 11:24 • Believer in death is “absent from the body and present with the Lord;” 2 Corinthians 5:8; “depart to be with Christ” Philippians 1:21, 23 • Not all believers will die; some will be changed (given new glorified bodies) without dying; 1 Corinthians 15:51 • Unbelievers go to Hades when they die Luke 16:22-23

  7. Death and Resurrrections • At the rapture, only believers will be raised; 1 Corinthians 15:23; 1 Thessalonians 4:16 • Unbelievers will be raised at the end of the millennium and be judged; Revelation 20:5

  8. Paul’s Purpose for This Text • During his journey, Paul taught the Thessalonians about end times and the imminent return of Jesus Christ • Meanwhile, Christians had died • Did they miss the Lord’s return? • Answer: 1 Thessalonians 4:3-18 • And persecution was severe • Were they in the midst of the Day of the Lord (tribulation)? • Answer: 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11

  9. 1 Thessalonians 4:13 13 But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. • Be informed about those who are asleep • So that you will not grieve as those with no hope

  10. 1 Thessalonians 4:14 14 For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with Him those who have fallen asleep. • Basis for hope; the death and resurrection of Christ • If we believe in the death and resurrection of Christ, we can believe the dead in Christ will rise again • “Through Jesus” hope of resurrection of those asleep in Jesus is made possible by Jesus • “bring with Him those who have fallen asleep”

  11. 1 Thessalonians 4:15 15 For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. • Word from the Lord • Order in which the rapture will occur • Those who have fallen asleep • Those who are alive

  12. 1 Thessalonians 4:16 16 For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. • How will the rapture take place? • Christ comes from heaven • With the cry of command • Voice of the archangel • Sound of the trumpet of God • Result: the dead in Christ will rise first • Dead in Christ? Church only or OT as well

  13. 1 Thessalonians 4:16 16 For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. • How will the rapture take place? • Christ comes from heaven • With the cry of command • Voice of the archangel • Sound of the trumpet of God • Result: the dead in Christ will rise first • Dead in Christ? Church only or OT as well

  14. 1 Corinthians 15:51-55 51 Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not sleep, but we shall be changed, 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed…. 54 When the perishable puts on the imperishable and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written; “Death is swallowed up in victory 55 O death where is your victory? O death , where is your sting?” • Not all saints will die • Living saints will be instantly changed • The dead will receive glorified bodies • The living will also receive glorified bodies • Then, “Death is swallowed up in victory.”

  15. 1 Thessalonians 4:17 17 Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord. • Believers who are alive will join the resurrected believers • Meet in the clouds with Christ • From then on, always with the Lord • Destination? My Father’s house

  16. 1 Thessalonians 4:18 18 Therefore, encourage one another with these words. • Words of comfort, cheer and hope. • Better times are coming • All saints in glorified bodies with their Savior forever

  17. When Will The Rapture Take Place? “But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only.” Matthew 24:36 • Like the people of Noah’s day…living it up and suddenly the floods swept them away (24:37-39) • Two working together and one gone (24:40-41) • Therefore: stay awake for “the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.” (24:44)

  18. Summary • Jesus is coming again • Believers dead and alive will be raptured • Receive glorified bodies • Spared the tribulation • Go to God’s house • Return with Christ in His second coming • Establish the millennial kingdom • Better times are coming…encourage each other with these words • Qualification for participating; belief in the truth of Christ’s death and resurrection
