Australian Lutheran World Service is the overseas aid and resettlement agency of the Lutheran Church of Australia.
Through God’s love, ALWS helps poor and oppressed people: • Get back on their feet again; • Find fresh hope; • Discover dignity and respect in their lives.
We want to MAKE POVERTY HISTORY!!
ALWS – Reaching out in love for justice For overseas aid, ALWS works mainly in eight countries • Sudan • Cambodia • Nepal • Mozambique • Papua New Guinea • Kenya • Indonesia • Burundi
ALWS – Reaching out in love for justice ALWSsometimes helps refugees in crisis – short term assistance for those in desperate need in some of the poorest countries of the world. ALWSmore often helps in the long-term sustainable development of rural communities in poor countries. Sustainable development is a process that empowers people in poor communities to ultimately help themselves.
ALWS – Reaching out in love for justice Primarily, ALWS programs focus on empowerment and development through: • Food security (teaching how to grow a variety of food crops all year round) • Water availability (the building of water posts, wells, or dams) • Income generation (finding ways for the very poor to make a living) • Advocacy (standing up for what is right and just)
ALWS – Reaching out in love for justice ALWS work with local people, using local resources wherever possible. This helps: • To teach local people • To give opportunities to people • To improve the economy of the region • Keep the culture strong
ALWS – Reaching out in love for justice • ALWS delivers programs through partnerships with Lutheran World Service, Action by Churches Together & ELC-PNG • Locally, ALWS provides support to refugees who are going to resettle in Australia.
Sudan Sudan is a country trying to rebuild after decades of war. Many refugees who fled Sudan are now returning home after living in refugee camps in neighbouring countries. Conditions are very difficult in Sudan. It will take many years to rebuild the country. In Sudan, ALWS is working with the refugees as they return home, to grow food, have safe water, and find ways to keep their family together.
Kenya ALWS works in Kenya in refugee camps to care for desperate people who are fleeing from warring countries. People in the camps mainly come from Sudan, but also from other African nations. ALWS work to help provide immediate needs, including food, water, shelter, love and care.
Indonesia Parts of Indonesia are very wealthy, but parts of Indonesia are in great need of assistance. After the tsunami hit Indonesia in 2004, the need for assistance expanded dramatically. ALWS initially responded to the tsunami with immediate relief to the people in desperate need. Now ALWS are working with communities to rebuild for the long-term, predominantly through the teaching of life-skills.
Mozambique Mozambique is a country rebuilding after many years of war. Refugees have returned home and are starting their lives again. The country on the whole is still very poor, but their have been some very positive developments for the country. People generally are living in better conditions than they were and there is an air of hope as many more children go to school.
Nepal Nepal is a small country between India and China – the two most populated counties in the world. There is much poverty in this little nation, but also much hope for a better future. ALWS works with some of the most remote and poor people – the Daliats – who are oppressed in many ways. They also work with the Bhutanese refugees, who have lived in refugee camps for over 18 years.
Papua New Guinea Papua New Guinea is more a mis-managed country than a poor country, but many people still live in poverty. It has great wealth in natural resources, but corruption makes it difficult for ordinary people to lead healthy, happy lives. ALWS are working hard to reduce corruption, and to teach people ways that they can help each other to lead better lives.
Cambodia Cambodia is a country that was destroyed in may ways over thirty years ago during the Khmer Rouge rule. They are still trying to get back on their feet and combat desperate poverty. ALWS work with some of the poorest rural communities in long-term development. They are trying to get food and water into communities, and make options available for employment. They are teaching skills, building schools and health posts and standing up for the rights of the people in order to empower the people of Cambodia.
Burundi Burundi is one of the world’s poorest nations. It is a country trying to rebuild after decades of war. Many Burundian refugees who fled are now returning home after living in refugee camps in neighbouring countries. Conditions are very difficult in Burundi, and it will take many years to rebuild the country. • In Burundi, ALWS is working with the refugees as they return home, to grow food, have safe water, and find ways to keep their family together.
For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me. Matthew 25:35-36
God puts poor people on their feet again; he rekindles burned-out lives with fresh hope, restoring dignity and respect to their lives! (1 Samuel 2:8 MSG).
Thank you for your support of Australian Lutheran World Service. Thank you for helping us to make a real difference in the world. Thank you for helping us to reduce global poverty. To God be the glory!
