Expedition of Exploration • After purchasing LA, Jefferson persuaded Congress to sponsor an expedition to explore this new territory, mainly for scientific reasons, also commercial and military ventures • Chose Meriwether Lewis, personal sec.(28), William Clark(32) little bro of Rev. Hero George Rogers Clark • Crew was navigators, gunsmiths, carpenters, scouts, artists and a cook, some Native Americans w/ French, training, York only African • Left from St. Louis, MO, A long boat and two shorter boats, sailed up MO river, Wintered w/ Mandan in ND today, met Charbonneau and wife Sacajawea, led west to Shoshone, reached Pacific, split on way back into two groups, discover Yellowstone • After reaching St. Louis, Lewis headed for Washington DC at Natches Trace some say he committed suicide, others say he was murdered

  3. Pikes Expedition • Jefferson sent Zebulon Pike to explore the Southern part of LA • Pike crossed KS, to CO and captured by Spanish, rolled journals up in gun barrells • Escorted through NM and TX into Mexico then taken to Nacogdoches, TX

  4. Secession • Federalists opposed LA purchase, feared new Republican states • Federalists in New Eng. Planned to secede(Break away), wanted a Northern Confederacy, supported Burr for Gov. of NY, Hamilton ridiculed led to duel
