Addressing Bugs in ECLOUD Simulations for LHC Arcs

This presentation by Humberto Maury Cuna, delivered on October 28th, 2011, focuses on a bug identified in the ECLOUD code affecting heat load simulations in LHC arcs, specifically under field-free conditions and in quadrupole and dipole setups. The analysis includes various configurations, results from 7 TeV energy tests, and observations of oscillations in quadrupole heat load. Key simulation parameters were outlined, and the findings suggest that the bug primarily impacts dipoles and the photoemission case, highlighting the significance of secondary electron yield (SEY) and time steps on heat load behavior.

  1. E-cloud Simulation Meeting Ecloud simulations for the LHC arcs Humberto Maury Cuna October 28th, 2011

  2. Outline • A bug in ECLOUD code – XY distribution for: • Field-free section • Quadrupole • Dipole • Oscillations in quadrupole heat load simulations.

  3. Field-free region – 7 TeV – 1.2x1011 – 25 ns

  4. Quadrupole – 7 TeV – 1.2x1011 – 25 ns

  5. Dipole – 7 TeV – 1.2x1011 – 25 ns

  6. Dipole – Gas ionization 0.54 T B = 0.01 T

  7. Oscillations in quadrupoleHeat load simulations • Simulationsparameters: • Macroparticles: 2500 • Time stepsinter bunchgap: 3000 • Energy: 7 TeV • Bunchspacing: 25 ns • Reflectivity: 0.5 • Ibend=2

  8. Results The “bug” seems to affect only dipoles and just the photoemission case. The quadrupoles heat load oscillations depends on the SEY and also the number of time steps.

  9. Thank you for your attention
