  4. Style, Tone, and Mood • …all serve to SUPPORT the author’s purpose!

  5. Style STYLE is the way the author uses words, phrases, and sentences. The author’s • personal word choice/vocabulary, • types of sentences, • point of view from which the text is told, • organization of the text. These 4 components will reveal his/her style.

  6. Style can be… • Formal • Conversational • Businesslike • Playful • Realistic • Etc.

  7. Mood and Tone • Mood and tone are the feelings that are attached to a poem – • the author’s feelings about the topic (tone) • the feelings the reader gets when we read the poem (mood)

  8. Think Pair Share:Which of the following emotions might you feel during a storm? Explain why. • Happy/pleased • mad/angry • Scared/fearful • Excited/thrilled • Mean/cruel • Bored/uninterested • Annoyed/displeased • Sad/heartbroken • Calm/neutral

  9. Mood and Tone • Ask yourself: • How does the author feel about the topic they are writing about? • How do I feel when I read the text? • What voice can I imagine this text being read in?

  10. How to Determine Mood/Tone Look for words that show whether the poem is Positive, Negative, or Neutral (in the middle, not + or -) connotations!

  15. Look at the sentence, what words show the feelings/mood? • An adult is watching their favorite comedy show when something hilarious happens. • A child is ecstatic when he learns he will be going to Disney World for vacation in two days
