  1. GlobAEROSOL User Workshop Project status, schedule and phase 2 planning

  2. Project status • Phase I of the GlobAEROSOL project has recently been completed, including the following activities: • Collection and analysis of user requirements • GlobAEROSOL processor design • Implementation of the system • Succesful Qualification Review • Generation of a Prototype Product Set (PPS): • A one month time-series of the global daily 10 km aerosol product from each sensor (i.e. ATSR-2, AATSR, MERIS and SEVIRI) • A one month time series of the global daily 10 km aerosol merged product • Statistical composites derived from each of the above products • Preliminary Validation and Assessment report • (User assessment to be completed following this meeting) Project status, schedule and phase 2 planning

  3. Phase 2 activities • Phase II is expected to start after the present User Workshop. The main tasks to accomplish during this second stage of the project are: • Production of the final set of aerosol products (13 years) • Intercomparison with other EO derived aerosol datasets • Report on the Intercomparison of CTM Models for PM Monitoring (TBD) • Final Product Validation Report • Service Assessment Report • Promotion activities: • New GlobAEROSOL Brochure • New GlobAEROSOL User's Workshop • Final project report Project status, schedule and phase 2 planning

  4. Intercomparison of CTM Models • A CTM model intercomparison exercise, based on the GlobAEROSOL products, is being considered for being carried out • The objectives are to assess the performance of CTM models for PM monitoring over Europe, and to encourage the assimilation and use of the aerosol data sets within the field of PM monitoring for public health • If finally done, the intercomparison should include the following models (baseline at SOW stage, TBD): • TM3 (Royal Dutch Meteorological Institute - KNMI) • MOCAGE (Météo-France) • EMEP unified model (Norwegian Meteorological Institute) • MOZART (Max Plank Institute for Meteorology, Hamburg, Germany) • EURAD (University of Cologne, Germany) • IFS (ECMWF) - only for the intercomparison of radiative effects Project status, schedule and phase 2 planning

  5. Data set production • The full GlobAEROSOL data set, comprising the 13 years of sensor readings, will be generated in a cluster of computers. • According to the present requirements of the various algorithms, and benchmarks on the production platform, the processing of each of the sensors will take, approximately: • ATSR-2 (1995-2001) 23004 hours • AATSR (2002-2007) 30674 hours • MERIS (2002-2007) 2191 hours • SEVIRI (2004-2007) 18993 hours • MGAP / Stats 547 hours • Total 75409 hours = 3142 days x processor • It is therefore feasible to estimate that the whole data set can be generated in 6 months, and be ready for distribution by mid 2008 Total processing time, to be distributed among the cluster nodes (2.8 Ghz Intel Xeon) Project status, schedule and phase 2 planning

  6. Phase II schedule • After the Mid-term Review Meeting (MTR) the next project activities are scheduled as follow: • GlobAEROSOL data set MTR + 8 months • New GlobAEROSOL User Workshop MTR + 11 months • Report on the intercomparison of EO-derived aerosol data sets MTR + 12 months • Report on the intercomparison of CTM models for PM monitoring MTR + 12 months • Product Validation Report MTR + 12 months • Service Assessment Report MTR + 12 months • Final Report MTR + 12 months Project status, schedule and phase 2 planning
