  1. Industrial Revolution The End of the World As We Once Knew It!! The Economy moves from an agrian (agricultural economy) to an Industrial economy. )

  2. England 1800-1900 • People were wealthy and healthy

  3. Cottage Industries • Small places produced goods • Small amounts of goods were produced due to the fact that there were family run businesses and very few employees • Industry began to grow and new machinery would change all that

  4. Factories Replace Cottage Industry Factories were usually built next to the rivers to use the water power to run the machines.

  5. Factories • Many people move to the cities to get jobs • Fewer people were needed to grow crops • Textiles – woven cloth now could be made in large amounts

  6. Industrial Revolution • Creates Social Changes • Nations compete with each other • Began in Great Britain • Used to increase productivity • Britain had a great supply of natural resources like coal and iron • They also had many people – human resources

  7. The Steam Engine • Invented by James Watts in the 1700’s • Used for riverboats, textile mills and locomotives • Inventions like the Railroad caused more growth of these iron and coal industries • The Steam Engine was essential to running major transportation lines like riverboats and trains!!

  8. The Downside of Industrial Revolution • Pollution! – the air became dirty • Health – The people suffered from asthma and other breathing problems • Working Conditions – bosses pushed for more products – employees worked 18-20 hours a day without a break, no water, bad lighting and in unsafe and very harsh conditions

  9. Better and Worse • Clothing was cheaper to the public • People could afford more clothing • They could wash their clothing more often • Being clean = reduction of illnesses • Europe was stronger • European economy was very good • Europe dominated the world in 1800-1900
