  1. The Desert By Alice, Brian, Franciel, and Poeun

  2. The Intro-Duction Welcome to the Desert, the hottest biome on Earth! Most people think of the desert as a dead and dry place, but believe it or not, the desert has some interesting wild life. Including variety of plants that has special ways to survive in the desert. Deserts are located in northern Africa, western North America, western Asia, the center of Australia, and on the west coast of South America.

  3. Biome Description • The surrounding of the desert is very dry and hot. The area and the amount of animals have taken it’s part in the desert. • it’s best to have amount of animals that have adapted towards the heat. • desert plants also have service through out the heat by holding water inside themselves.

  4. Description • Mountains- prevents rain from getting into the desert. • Sand Dunes-the wind that blows into the desert creates sand dunes and some are to be 200 meters in height. • Canyons- when it rains, the water rushes downhill and makes the levels that form canyons.

  5. Climate The climate of the desert biome is very hot and dry. Another control is land and water because land heats up and cools down much faster than water, making the climate more extreme. The climate controls for this region is latitude because they are positioned near the equator.

  6. Climate Continues… December to March is the time period when the desert receives the most pre- cipitation. Most deserts averages less than 25 cm of precipitation. In May and June, the desert doesn’t receive any precipitation at all. During summer time the temp. reaches 100 degrees Fahrenheit or higher. At night, the temp. drops to 45 degrees Fahrenheit or lower. Some deserts has mild winters, while others have freezing temperatures and snow.

  7. Hot desert-are near the equator and these deserts are the sandy-Egyptian kind. Types of Desert Semi-desert-are those seen on the westerns and they look like scrubland

  8. ANIMALS Kangaroo-travel long distances for water at a spring. Camels-have 1-2 humps on back and store water in there. Snakes-get moisture from other prey. Lizards-stays out of sun and moves little as possible.

  9. Endangered Species • Addaxes-less than 200 of them left because of hunting and tourist. • Leopards-hunted for their beautiful fur. • Arabian Oryx-hunted for their horns and fur since the 1940’s when motorized hunting and automatic weapons began.

  10. Endangered Animals The Desert bighorn is endangered primarily due to loss of habitat from urban development and the slaughtering of herds from viral respiratory infections that affect lambs.

  11. More endangered animals are the desert tortoise, they use it to make medicine and use it for ivory to make uses for human conveniences. The Aruba rattlesnake is endangered because of loss of habitat to inning and tourism.

  12. Plants • In order to survive in the desert, the plants stores water in their roots, leaves, and stems. • Plants that have long roots gets water from underneath and those with short roots get water from rain drops.

  13. Types of Plants Peyote-it is a small plant that is really low to the ground Barrel Cactus- Swells with water after rainfall and shrinks as it uses it. Mesquite Tree-roots extend as deep as 263 ft.

  14. Environmental Issues • Tourist-there are a few ATV tours that drives through the Desert and damages the plants and some animals home. • Human Development-people are constructing buildings for people to live in and making another Las Vegas.

  15. Conclusion So as you have seen and heard, the desert biome is more than just two words, hot and dry. Its filled with life and interesting facts. If people continue to see the desert as nothing but just a big land of dirt, many animals and their homes will be destroyed. Also the opportunity to learn about the desert, the plants and animals that can survive there would be lost.
