  1. The Desert RACHEL BOYD

  2. The Weather In this lesson you will learn that there are deserts that are hot and dry, or cold. A hot and dry desert is, as you can tell from the name, hot and dry. hot and dry deserts temperature ranges from about 20 to 25 degrees Celsius. The maximum temperature for hot desert ranges from about 43 to 49 degrees Celsius. Hot and Dry Deserts usually have very little rainfall and/or concentrated rainfall in short periods between long rainless periods. This averages out to under 15 cm. a year of rainfall. Most hot and dry deserts don't have many plants. They do have some plants that are low and down though The only animals they have that can survive most likely have the ability to bury themselves under ground. This is because they would not be able to live in the hot sun and heat. They only come out in the night when it is a little cooler.

  3. Desert plants • Saguaro Cactus • Dragon tree • Expandable root • Old man cactus • Barrel Cactus • Prickly pear cactus • Fish hook cactus • desert

  4. Location

  5. Animals • Addax • Cactus wren (bird) • Desert lark (bird) • Dingo • Fat sand rat • Fennec fox • Gila monster • Great jerboa

  6. Cold Desert • A cold desert is a desert that has snow in the winter instead of just dropping a few degrees in temperature like they would in a hot and dry desert does. Cold deserts temperature in winter is about -2 to 4 degrees Celsius and in the summer about 21 to 26 degrees Celsius a year. Cold Deserts usually have lots of snow. They also have little rain around the spring. This averages out to 15 - 26 cm a year. It never gets warm enough for plants to grow so there aren't many. Just a few grasses and mosses. The animals in cold deserts also have to bury themselves but in this case to keep warm, not cool. That is why you might find some of the same animals here as you would in the hot and dry deserts.

  7. Survival Precautions • Make sure you tell someone where you are going and when you will return. • Watch for signs of heat injury. If someone complains of tiredness or wanders away from the group, they may be a heat casualty. • Try and drink water at least once an hour. • Get in the shade when resting, do not lie directly on the ground. • Do not take off your shirt and work during the day. • Check the color of your urine. A light color means you are drinking enough water, a dark color means you need to drink more.

  8. Food • Concentrate on the smaller animals due to their abundance and their easy to prepare. • Its important to know the habitats and behavioral patterns of classes of animals • For example, animals that are excellent for trapping, are those that inhabit a particular range and occupy a den or nest, those that have somewhat fixed feeding areas, and those that have trails leading from one area to another.

  9. Resources • Cactuses • Animals • Trees

  10. Fun Facts • There are 4 deserts in the United States. • There are less than 20 inches of rainfall a year. • The Driest Desert in the world is the Atacama Desert in South America. • There are over 2,500 different species of cactuses in the world.
