Roosevelt in 1938 to combat polio. • The 1950’s teen volunteers participated in a campaign called, Teens Against Polio. Today, the Campaign is Teens against Prematurity.”

  3. What is a premature baby? • A premature baby is one who is born before 37 weeks of gestation. A full term pregnancy lasts 37-42 weeks. • Young women are at an increased risk of having a premature baby as they don’t always take proper care of themselves.

  4. Health Problems • Premature babies face more health problems than a full term baby. They are at greater risk as their bodies aren’t finished developing. • Premature births are the leading killers of babies in their first month of life. • These babies may face cerebral palsy, mental retardation, blindness, and chronic lung problems. • Premature babies also have a harder times fighting infections off as their immune systems aren’t fully formed. Infections that affect a premature baby include pneumonia( a lung infection), sepsis( a blood infection) and meningitis(an infection in the fluid around the brain and spinal)

  5. What you do now matters! • Teens are more likely to drink and use drugs than older women who are trying to have a baby. • Alcohol use during pregnancy may increase the risk of problems to the baby, including being born small, early, and having birth defects including mental retardation. Even light drinking may harm the baby. No level of alcohol during pregnancy has been proven safe. This includes beer, wine, and liquor. • When a pregnant woman drinks, alcohol passes swiftly through the placenta to her baby. • Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) is one of the most common known causes of mental retardation, and the only cause that is entirely preventable. Prenatal alcohol exposure is a leading cause of mental retardation in the US – and is entirely preventable. • Babies born to mothers who drink alcohol may have FAS. Children with FAS may: • Born Small • Problems eating and sleeping • Problems hearing and seeing • Problems paying attention • Have trouble controlling their behavior • Need medical care all their lives

  6. Health • One should eat healthy foods every day, avoid junk food as they have very minimal nutrients. • Go to your health care provider for regular doctors visits, to make sure you don’t have any health problems that could affect you during pregnancy or your baby. • Take folic acid even before you are pregnant, up to 70% of neural tube defects could be prevented if all pregnant women received an adequate amount of folic acid.
