  2. Facebook Background • Created by Mark Zuckerbergin 2004 • Originally “thefacebook.com • Meant for adding photos, connecting with friends, and getting to know new ones. • First designed for just college students. • Movie “Social Network”

Facebook’s Technology • Relies on 200 memcached (memory catching) servers for storing. • Signed an agreement with DuPont FabrosTechnology for 10,000 square feet of space of server storage. • SQL to “FQL” allows 3rd party applications to look at your page and see what fits you. • Servers powered by Intel. • Prineville, Oregon

  4. Facebook’s Statistics • Over 500 million active users. • On averages 250,000 new accounts per day. • Also largest image sharing network. • “Social” or “Business”.

  5. MySpace Background • Founded by Tom Anderson in 2003. • Targets the teen demographic. • Easy to customize your entire page.

  6. MySpace’s Technology • Uses DNS Server, so when domain is sent, less cluster and slow-down. • For apps like emailing or chatting through MySpace, dragonblue.NET is used as an application server. • 20-terabyte server used to upload songs, images, ect.

  7. MySpace Statistics MySpace hitting panic button? • 125 million active users. (much less than Facebook). • Numbers have been dwindling for years. • Why is this?

  8. Twitter • Three founders Evan Williams, Biz Stone and Jack Dorsey. • 2006-2007. • Different, yet similar to MySpace and Facebook.

  9. Twitter’s Technology • Uses REST, Representational State Transfer to design the site. • Also uses Web Syndication Formats, which is what takes your “Tweet” and send it to all your followers.

  10. Twitter’s Statistics • 460,000 new accounts per day (highest out of 3) • 106,000,000 active users. • On average, 55 million tweets a day. • 456 TPS (Tweets Per Second) on the day of Michael Jackson’s death.

  11. Quick Interview Caitlyn Trimble I like that Facebook isn’t all about how cool your page looks. Its more about you. Not as childish. When did you make your own Twitter? Over last summer. Which of all of the Social Networking do you like the most? Facebook because the statuses are like twitter, and like I said earlier, its more mature than myspace. • When did you have a MySpace? • I stopped in junior year. • Whys that? • I started using Facebook more. • What is it about Facebook that you like more?
