This discussion invites participants to reflect on the eloquent nature of the Creator as the Maker of Heaven and Earth, as well as exploring the intricate relationship between existence, free will, and the concept of good and evil. Through engaging with historical thoughts from figures such as Origen, Ambrose of Milan, and Augustine, we challenge prevailing beliefs, examine the roles of divine influence in our lives, and delve into philosophical questions about mortality, suffering, and the unseen forces around us. Join us for a thoughtful exploration of these profound themes.

  1. Holy Trinity - 5 The First Person Maker of Heaven & Earth, of all that is Seen and Unseen

  2. Experience • Do you believe in magic? • Are you a magician? • Can you show us a magic trick? • How do you do magic?

  3. Discussion & reflection: • Maker of Heaven and Earth, of all that is Seen and Unseen • What does it mean “Maker?” • What does it mean “Heaven?” • What does it mean “Earth?”

  4. Discussion & reflection: • What if someone says to you the world just came into being, the Big Bang theory or something like that? • Origen (c 185-254, Israel) I cannot understand how so many distinguished people…have thought the world was uncreated, that is, that is was not formed by God…They prefer to say that it came into being by chance, thinking that so great a work as the universe could exist without an architect or designer.

  5. Discussion & reflection: • What if someone says that God helps those who help themselves? Would you agree? • Ambrose of Milan (c. 340-4 April 397, Italy) God saw that those who were struggling could not be saved without help, and so he offered medicine to the sick. Therefore he provided the means of recovery to everyone, so that if anyone should perish, he would have no one to blame for this but himself for refusing the cure.

  6. Discussion & reflection: • What if someone said that it doesn’t matter what you do to nature, it will always sooner or later recover? • Arnobius of Sicca (died c 330, North Africa) Does it not occur to you to reflect and to examine whose property it is that you live on? Who owns the earth that you cultivate? Who owns the air that you breathe? …Whose water is it?

  7. Discussion & reflection: • What if someone said they worried about the absence of time in heaven because how would you when it was time to eat? • Augustine (13 Nov 354-28 Aug 430, North Africa) If the sacred and infallible Scriptures say that it was in the beginning that God created the heavens and the earth…then it is clear that the world was not made in the course of time but simultaneously with time itself.

  8. Discussion & reflection: • What if someone wonders why God made us since we have to die anyway? What would you say? • Theophilus of Antioch (2nd Century, Syria) Was humankind made mortal or immortal? … Neither. … Humanity was therefore neither mortal nor immortal but capable of becoming either. .. People brought death on themselves through carelessness and disobedience, but God grants the gift of life to everyone who obeys him.

  9. Discussion & reflection: • What if someone asked why bad things happed to good people? • Lactantius (c 240-320, Italy) God arranged for there to be a distinction between good and evil things so that we might learn to appreciate the value of what is good. Observing the good also helps us understand the meaning of evil. Neither good nor evil can really be understood without the presence of the other.

  10. Discussion & reflection: • What if someone asks you what a Guardian Angel is? • Clement of Alexandria (c 150-215, Egypt) • The spiritual person prays along with the angels…He is never out of their keeping, because even when he prays alone, the holy ones are standing there beside him.

  11. Discussion & reflection: • What if someone asks you about demons? • Tatian the Assyrian (c 120-180, Syria) None of the demons possesses flesh. They are spiritual in nature, like fire or air. The bodies of demons can therefore be seen only by those who the Spirit of God indwells and strengthens, not by others… The nature of the demons has no place for repentance, for they are the reflection of matter and of wickedness.

  12. Written reflection Name: Date: • What was most important to you in today’s lesson?
